Telus' new service gives you on-demand television no matter where you are

Looking for on-demand television for you laptop, smartphone or tablet? Check out the Telus Optik on the Go service

Use this Telus' Optik mobile service to watch TV shows and movies on demand wherever you go

A few weeks ago, we were invited to the Telus offices in downtown Vancouver to check out a couple of new services being offered by the company. Here's a sneak peek at Telus’s new Optik on the Go service.

How it works: If you’re already a Telus subscriber, you’ll need to download the Optik on the Go app and register at Telus.com before you can access any channels. The app gives you access to whichever Video on Demand channels you already receive at home, but on your mobile devices.

What it does: Telus’s Video on Demand service already has DVD player-like functions — on your home TV, you can stop, pause, forward and rewind shows from premium subscription channels like HBO Canada. (Confession: This writer has been a Telus subscriber for over a year, but had no idea that programs on subscription channels like Movie Central could be accessed any time through VOD.) With Optik on the Go, you get the same functions and shows you get on your TV, but packaged specifically for your smartphone, tablet and/or laptop. The new service is available to Optik TV customers in B.C. and Alberta, on Apple and Android operating systems, and can be accessed from anywhere (as long as you have an Internet connection, of course).

Why you want it: The Video on Demand service is already pretty good value for money; it’s sort of like a mini-Netflix that offers the programming you might already subscribe to (including Super Channel, Hollywood Suite, Family Channel, Baby TV and more) in a more convenient watch-it-anytime package. Optik on the Go is an additional convenience that lets you watch your favourite shows and channels, in HD or otherwise, not only when you want but also where you want — whether you’re out and about or just in another room in your home that doesn’t have a TV set. And for Telus subscribers, Optik on the Go can be used at no extra cost, unless you’re using your mobile network, which could incur data usage charges, instead of a Wi-Fi connection.
