A year after the Olympics, Vancouver's Olympic Village is still dead zone but, as Trevor Jansen discovers, people in the village are surprisingly optimistic about its future

One year after the Winter Games, Vancouver's Olympic Village is still a dead zone with more than 60 percent vacancy [pdf], no buyers, rumours of shoddy workmanship, the developer in receivership and the city scrambling to make it right. To be sure, it is a sore spot for politicians and taxpayers alike.

I went to talk to people who live and work in the village to get a sense of how they feel about the area and any sense of community that may be there. Despite the obvious problems, everyone I spoke with was surprisingly positive and optimistic about the future of the area.

    nice piece Trevor!
I think the OV takes a lot of slack, but I really think it will pick over time and once their are more units filled, it could thrive. It's a great location, being so close to the core. It just needs PEOPLE and business. And less expensive housing.
