Minimize your mileage

Want to curb your cauliflower’s commute, or find farms where animals are allowed to roam free and graze on grass? Sourcing local eats is just a point and click away, thanks to the Eat Well Guide, an online directory that lists nearly 9,000 farms, restaurants, bakeries and shops that sell meat, poultry, dairy and eggs that have been raised in a sustainable manner.

Simply plug your postal code into the free database, select the distance within which you want to search (e.g. from five to 500 miles or kilometres), and a shopping list of sources is at your fingertips, along with website URLs, maps and other useful info.

You can also search specifically for a butcher or baker, or particular product, such as lamb, bison or even rabbit. And since the directory encompasses all of Canada and the U.S., you can take your eco-eating on the road and enjoy a local menu wherever you wander.
