I'll be sharing some tips to keep your body and mind healthy at the Vancouver Wellness Show this weekend

The show runs from Friday to Sunday and is featuring some great speakers, including yours truly.

I've been asked to speak on a topic I'm very passionate about: running.

Get Practical Advice on Running in Your 40s and Beyond

On Friday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. at the Women & Wellness stage, I'll be giving practical advice on how to keep running well into your 40s, 50s and beyond. I'll share with you some strategies on how to enjoy a lifetime of injury-free running.

On Saturday at 11 a.m. my subject is Running for a Healthy Body and Mind. Many people think of yoga or Pilates when mind-body exercise is mentioned. But did you know that running is actually a fantastic way to sync your mind and body?

If you need to be convinced that running is such a great form of exercise here's a list of scientifically validated benefits of running.

Running decreases your risk of developing:

  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Diabetes
  • Gall bladder disease
  • Gout
  • Glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration

Running can also:

  • Improve your cholesterol profile (decrease bad cholesterol, increase good cholesterol)
  • Keep your body-mass index (BMI) in the healthy range
  • Keep your weight lower than non-runners as you age
  • Prevent your belly from getting larger as you get older
  • Negate some of the weight-gaining effects of a poor diet
  • Strengthen your bones, including your spine, better than virtually any other activity

Wow! Do you really need more reasons to take up running?

It really does help slow down the aging process and help keep you healthy. And contrary to popular belief, running is not bad for your knees.

BC Living will have a booth at the show again this year and I'll be there after my presentations on all three days to answer any of your fitness, weight-loss and nutrition-related questions. I'll also have a special deal on my running workout DVDs so make sure you stop by and say hello if you're going to the show.
