Embrace fall vibes with some of our favourite hair, skin and makeup products

Embrace fall vibes with some of our favourite hair, skin and makeup products

Autumn is always an inspiring season for makeup and skin care. Colours go richer and deeper, textures become more extreme and skincare gets more restorative. As soon as that familiar chill is in the air, we seem to instinctively look for new products to help us survive the oncoming transition to cooler weather.

These products will do exactly that so you can embrace autumn with as much joy as you did summer…

1. Joli Rouge Lacquer by Clarins

Just in time to rescue parched summer lips, this is a lip-balm-meets-lip-lacquer in a convenient stick format. The ultra-shine texture comes from a formula that’s infused with more than 70 percent oil for maximum hydration and vinyl gloss. This lacquer has the opacity of a lipstick and melts onto lips, neatly smoothing any lines.
Available in Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs and on clarins.ca, $29

2. Oil Infused Moisturizer by Jergens

After baring arms and legs all summer, it’s time to treat them with a cushion-y moisturizer. This is a brand new range of oil-infused lotions that are a lot richer and provide deeper hydration than earlier iterations. For very dry skin, try the Ultra Care Restoring Argan, which contains Moroccan argan oil and Vitamin E, which will not only hydrate but also heal and repair the skin. For dry, ashy skin, try the Nourishing Honey with honey and orange blossom to soothe and soften skin.
Available at Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs, $10.99

3. 4-in-1 Love Your Selfie Longwear Foundation and Concealer by PUR

This is the foundation-concealer that’s been all over social media because it launched with 100 shades. Each colour comes in three undertones: warm, cool and neutral, which completely makes sense and is perfect for those who have less-than-popular (read: hard to find) undertones that are often overlooked by other mass brands and who often have to resort to mixing shades. Beyond the vast colour selection, this vegan foundation performs impressively. It combines skin-care benefits (green tea, ginseng, Vitamin B among other nutrients) alongside coverage that’s simply great. It can be sheered out with a sponge, or applied to full coverage with fingers or a brush all while keeping your skin looking like skin. The unique dual-applicator allows you to dispense by pump or to unscrew the top and apply with the doe-foot applicator.
Available exclusively at select Shoppers Drug Mart and online via beautyboutique.ca, $47

4. Candy Night Eau de Parfum by Prada

The latest member of the Prada Candy family is darker, richer and definitely more complex than earlier versions. It opens with gourmand tonka bean (giving off a fragrance of vanilla, almond, cinnamon and clove) that’s balanced out with bitter orange. Then it develops a barely imperceptible powdery note, thanks to the iris, that blooms the fragrance into a new, almost unexpected direction. Anchored by dark chocolate and a hint of patchouli, this perfume still captures the lighthearted whimsy of earlier Candy fragrances, but pulls in richer tones that make this perfect for transitioning into fall and winter.
Available at The Bay, Sephora and Shoppers Drug Mart, starting at $82

5. Ginger Scalp Care Shampoo and Conditioner by The Body Shop

No judgement if you’ve been combating sweaty summer or post-workout hair with dry shampoo. But there comes a time when you need to not just clarify your hair, but give your scalp a treatment as well. After all, a healthy scalp is the foundation for healthy hair. This shampoo and conditioner removes buildup, soothes the scalp and loosens those persistent flakes. Made with ginger essential oil from Sri Lanka and Community Trade honey from Ethiopia, this is a treatment that will balance and reset your hair game.
Available at The Body Shop, starting at $6 for shampoo and $11 for conditioner

6. Beauty Light Wand by Charlotte Tilbury

There are four colour options in this new product: two blushes and two highlighters. What they all have in common is the glow factor, which is spectacular. The two blushes (peach and pink) have medium, buildable pigmentation that give a soft-focus glow to cheeks. The two highlighters (champagne and gold) impart a luminous effect. To use the cushion applicator-topped tube, twist the base of the applicator to unlock, squeeze out a small amount, twist again to lock into place (so important), dab onto skin and tap the gel to blend.
Available at Nordstrom and Sephora, $50

7. Suede Shade Liquid Eyeshadow by Stila

First, there were the Glitter & Glow, then the Shimmer & Glow liquid eyeshadows. And now, Stila’s just released their new Suede Shade liquid eyeshadows, a range of creamy matte (not flat) colours. There’s actually a very subtle dimensional quality to them that—while definitely not even being close to a satin finish—gives them “life.” The colours can all be sheered out to provide a light wash of colour, or they can be built up to create incredible depth. They layer over each other like a dream. If you choose to use these on their own, an eye primer is a must. But if you use them as an eye primer, they’ll make your eyeshadows look incredible.
Available at Shoppers Drug Mart, Murale and Stila.ca, $31

8. Frizz Ease Secret Weapon Touch-up Crème by John Fireda

Summer hair means different things at different times. At the beginning of summer, it means shiny, bouncy, sun-kissed locks. At the end of summer, it means dull, frizzy, sun-parched hair. This hair creme truly is a secret weapon for helping to replace natural oils lost through a season of swimming, UV exposure, extra sweaty fun and heat-styling tools. This one is especially good at the beginning and at the end of your styling routine: run a small dollop through rough-dry hair (90 percent dry) to prevent frizz and fly-aways, and again after styling to give hair that coveted piece-y look. And as we head into colder weather, try smoothing a little of this product on the inside of your hat to reduce static and help keep your hair calm and untangled.
Available at Amazon and London Drugs, $12.99

9. Glacé Touch by Laura Mercier

Released as part of the limited edition “Mediterranean Escape” collection, these multi-purpose glosses are the winners. There are four colours and depending on your skin tone, they can be used as highlighters, lip glosses or eye glosses. The texture is lightweight, a little bit sticky (in the good sense, so everything doesn’t just slide off within minutes of application) and provides high shine, glass-like illumination. They’re best used as a highlighter or lip gloss; eye glosses are great for editorial looks but never translate well into real life. They contain coconut water, cucumber water, glycerin and squalane for hydration and mineral pigments for natural but buildable coverage.
Available at Nordstrom and The Bay, $36

10. Waso Purifying Peel Off Mask by Shiseido

Waso is Shiseido’s diffusion line, launched in 2017. Backed by all the innovation and research at Shiseido, Waso targets a younger demographic that’s more active and the brand champions beauty—for everyone—from the inside out. This peel-off mask is a stunning pearl red colour with flashes of hot pink duo-chrome that’s meant to reset and recharge the skin. It includes red shiso extract to improve clarity; peony root extract to unclog pores and prevent blemishes; and an anti-pollution powder to absorb airborne air particles. The texture is incredibly thick so squeeze out more than you think and try to smooth over your face using as few strokes as possible as this starts to set fairly quickly. Use this over the entire face or just on targeted areas. After 20 minutes, peel off to reveal noticeably brighter, softer, smoother and clearer skin.
Available at Shoppers Drug Mart, London Drugs and Shiseido.ca, $38

11. Sheer Hydration Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF40 by AluimierMD

Summer might be over, but you still need to wear sunscreen, especially when you’re outside during the peak period of 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. AlumierMD is a Canadian cosmeceutical brand and their physical sunscreen (zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) will protect against harmful UVA (the kind that age you) and UVB (the kind that burn you) rays. The formula is not too thick (so it won’t leave a white cast) and not too thin (so you risk putting on too little) and won’t leave your skin feeling dry, which many facial sunscreens can do because of the addition of alcohol. In fact, this sunscreen contains plenty of beneficial skin care ingredients such as vitamin E, free-radical-battling antioxidants, a stable vitamin C, resveratrol, grape seed extract and glutathione. It’s a moisturizing sunscreen; if you have dry or dehydrated skin, you might still need a light moisturizer underneath, but if you have combination or oily skin, this will probably be enough on its own.
Available at medispas and AlumierMD.com, $48

12. Hyaluronic Acid Micro Infusion Patches by Neostrata

These clear patches are comprised of only one ingredient: 100% hyaluronic acid. Each packet comes with two patches that you place over areas of your face that need extra plumping, such as crow’s feet, forehead creases, laugh lines, nasolabial folds, etc. Just avoid your lips and undereye areas. The patches are a little prickly at first (but not at all irritating) but will soften up as the hyaluronic acid is absorbed. Keep them on overnight and when you take them off, the treated areas are noticeably filled out and smoother.
Available at Shoppers Drug Mart and London Drugs, $25
