Classic Trench

You can never go wrong with a trench coat. This piece always has and always will be a classic. The lighter material is perfect for warmer days, and some trenches are water-resistant too.

This trench coat from the Gap has a belt to give you a nice hourglass shape, while the coat from J.Crew sports nice button and collar details.

Military Style

If you’re looking for a shorter option, the military jacket is great for warmer fall weather. It also works well with more casual outfits, and pairs perfectly with jeans. This style of coat is primarily found in an army green colour, like the two pictured above.

Choose a looser jacket, like this one from J.Crew, for the ultimate in stylish weekend-wear, or go for a more structured coat, like this belted one from Banana Republic, for a garment that can be dressed up and worn to the office.

Coloured Wool

Instead of going for the classic black or grey, spice up fall’s gloomy days with a brightly coloured coat that will cheer you up while it keeps you warm.

J.Crew’s double-breasted coat comes in five colours, including this vibrant red. Or choose a coat in one of fall’s trending colours, like this royal blue number from Banana Republic. With a high collar and an easy zip-up option, it’s sure to keep you cozy and dry.

Colour Blocking

The colour blocking trend is huge on shirts and dresses and is making an appearance on coats this season. Colour blocking gives you a coat with visual interest, but without a pattern that will soon be dated. These coats exude a classic feel that will pair with almost anything.

Club Monaco adds a modern twist to a classic-style coat with a navy blue colour block. Or do two styles at once and choose this military-style coat colour blocked with navy blue and army green, from J.Crew.

Detailing

If you want a classic coat in black or grey, but still want it to stand out from the crowd, then look for one with added detail.

Aritzia does a fitted, double-breasted coat with a removable faux fur collar, letting you adjust the coat to suit your outfit for the day. For an eco-friendly bonus, the coat was made with recycled wool fibres that have been reprocessed into a stylish piece.

If fur isn’t your thing, then choose Zara’s tweed coat with faux leather sleeve and collar detailing. The faux leather adds a bit of an edge to a classic coat, and the length makes it perfect for windy days.

Short and Sweet

Sometimes longer coats can be too bulky and heavy, but going shorter doesn’t mean sacrificing style. Short wool coats are in all the stores this fall, and H&M does them best.

This faux fur-collared coat has a zipper that’s placed just off to the side, making this simple detail a statement on the coat.

H&M also takes a cue from the military with this short coat adorned in buttons and lapels, creating a piece that pairs well with skirts and dresses.

Loose and Baggy

For the ultimate in trending coats, choose a loose wool number. This style is usually buttonless, with wide collars and it may reach as low as your knees.

Zara does this trend with a camel coloured lining that peeks out on the oversized collar and hood. You can do up the coat on chilly days with the tie belt.

For a coat that has more of a sweater feel to it, Aritizia’s unstructured piece has silk trim on the outer sleeves and neckline for some added detail. It also comes with a tie belt.
