Most of us have felt like outsiders at some point in our lives, and that’s the focus of HBO’s Somebody Somewhere, a new comedy series starring and executive produced by comedian/singer Bridget Everett.

Everett, whose screen credits include Inside Amy Schumer and HBO’s Camping, plays Sam, who has struggled unsuccessfully all her life to fit the mold required by living in small-town Kansas.

Grappling with loss and acceptance, Sam finds her own personal salvation in singing, which leads her on a journey of self-discovery and into the arms of a community of fellow outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up, demonstrating that finding your people—and finding your voice—is possible anywhere, at any time.

Jeff Hiller co-stars as Joel, “who finds his vision-board dreams of faith, family and high-end kitchen appliances dashed in a spiral of joy, shame, music and stress rashes” after befriending Sam, who was his idol when they went to high school.

Mary Catherine Garrison plays Sam’s picture-perfect sister Tricia, but old sibling resentments resurface as she grows increasingly exhausted by the demands of living up to their hometown’s standards.

Mike Hagerty plays Sam’s father, stoic Kansas farmer Ed, who learns that burying his family’s problems only makes them grow, while Danny McCarthy plays Tricia’s husband Rick, who harbours a secret that sends Sam’s imagination spinning.

Rounding out the cast are Murray Hill and Jon Hudson Odom as Sam’s new friends.

“As a born and bred Kansan, I’m thrilled to share some of the beauty and complexity of the place that I grew up,” said Everett in a statement. “Special thanks to LL Cool J for the words to live by, ‘DDHD. Dreams Don’t Have Deadlines.’ ”

Somebody Somewhere airs Sundays at 9:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. on HBO Canada
