It’s curtains up once again as live theatre plans a big return

It’s been a long time coming for Broadway fans across B.C., but we can finally rejoice as Broadway Across Canada have announced that performances are scheduled to recommence at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in January 2022.

Shana Levin, Vice President of Broadway Across Canada states, “We are thankful to our patrons for their patience, flexibility and love of Broadway which has been an incredible support and inspiration during this extended intermission.  We look forward to welcoming theatergoers back to the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium at the start of next year for what is expected to be an unforgettable season and the long-awaited return of Broadway.”  

So, get ready for all the glitz, glamour and high notes as the season kicks off with Anastasia (January 18th to 23rd), Hamilton (May 24th to June 19th), Come from Away (August 16th to 28th), and Jesus Christ Superstar (November 15th to 20th) included in the lineup.

New season subscriptions are currently available online, with the ‘Season Pass Holders’ package including Anastasia, Hamilton and Jesus Christ Superstar, with Come from Away as an available additional option. All current subscribers have been contacted directly about their subscriptions to the Broadway Across Canada season.

Here’s a sneak peek at what to expect when the lights shine again…

1. Anastasia

Inspired by the beloved film, Anastasia takes us on a journey to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s as a young woman sets out to discover the truth about her past. Intertwined with mystery and misfortune, and a rather creepy Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya must put her trust in a stranger as they embark on this memorizing adventure for answers.

2. Hamilton

Hamilton captivates audiences with the extraordinary tale of an immigrant (Alexander Hamilton) from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Grammy-, Tony- and Olivier-Award winning production features blends of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway and is a true modern masterpiece.

3. Come from Away

Based on a true story and a community that welcomed the world, Tony winner Come from Away tells the remarkable tale of 7,000 stranded passengers following the 9/11 attacks and the small town in Newfoundland that helped them. This breathtaking new musical sees cultures clash, compassion erupt and connections form that would last forever.

4. Jesus Christ Superstar

The global phenomenon and multi-awarding winning production Jesus Christ Superstar was originally a 1970 rock opera album by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice before its transition into the classic Broadway hit musical. The story, told entirely through song, is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Exploring personal relationships and struggles, this one-of-a-kind production has been deemed uniquely fresh and inspiring.
