They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, and now The Addams Family is back in a new spinoff series focused on eldest child Wednesday

Portrayed by You’s Jenna Ortega, teenager Wednesday Addams is in a pickle after defending brother Pugsley by dumping a bunch of piranhas in the pool in which his bully was swimming, a stunt that gets her expelled and commanded to undergo court-ordered therapy. As a result, she’s sent to the mysterious Nevermore Academy by parents Morticia and Gomez (Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán). Determined to escape, Wednesday turns sleuth to investigate a series of brutal murders in the nearby woods that appear connected to the school.  WednesdayNetflixThat’s the premise of Wednesday, a new Addams Family spinoff from director Tim Burton, which also stars Gwendoline Christie (Game of Thrones) as Nevermore principal Larissa Weems, Riki Lindhome (Knives Out) as Wednesday’s therapist Valerie Kinbott, Christina Ricci (who famously played Wednesday in two Addams Family movies) as “dorm mother” Miss Thornhill and SNL alum Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester.WednesdayNetflixIn a recent interview with Empire, Burton revealed that he’d tried to revive the Addams Family movie a few years back, but those plans fizzled. However, his interest was instantly renewed when he was sent the script for Wednesday. “When I read this script, it just spoke to me about how I felt in school and how you feel about your parents, how you feel as a person,” he explained. “It gave the Addams Family a different kind of reality. It was an interesting combination.”

Indeed, feeling like an outcast in school is something that he experienced firsthand, and completely relates to. “You know, Wednesday and I have the same worldview,” Burton added.

Wednesday premieres Wednesday, November 23 on Netflix
