Broadway Across Canada recently unveiled their 2020-2021 lineup of shows and it’s looking to be a very exciting and lively year for theatre-goers. In addition to the productions already released for this spring/summer, Bactouring has announced another five shows taking centre stage at Queen Elizabeth Theatre starting this fall. And, spoiler alert, this includes the multi-award winning Broadway smash-hit Hamilton. Everyone’s favourite founding father is giving us all the more reason to make a song and dance about this one.

Here’s what Broadway Across Canada has in store for you…

 

1. Dear Evan Hansen – February 25 to March 1, 2020

Inspired by true events and called one of the most remarkable shows in musical theatre, Dear Evan Hansen tells the story of a 17-year-old boy crippled with anxiety and self-doubt trying to navigate his way through the chaos of high school and the unfortunate events that unfold before him. Striking chords with audience members, this Tony® and Grammy® Award-winning musical is a deeply personal tale about life and how we decide to live it.

2. Finding Neverland – April 7 to 12, 2020

Based on the Academy Award®-winning film, Finding Neverland follows playwright J.M. Barrie and his relationship with the family that inspired the wondrous adventures of Peter Pan. Taking you deep into the enchanting world of Neverland, The Lost Boys and Captain Hook, this charming story about the boy who never grew up is proof that you don’t have to either.

3. Wicked – July 9 to 26, 2020

We all know the tale of Dorothy and her red sparkly slippers, but you may not be familiar with the Land of Oz before she made her mark by landing in Munchkin land. Telling the untold true story of the Witches of Oz, a girl born with emerald-green skin and a rivalry turned into the unlikeliest of friendships, Wicked charms audiences with its inventive storyline and seriously catchy songs (don’t tell us you haven’t belted out, and totally butchered, your own rendition of ‘Defying Gravity’). Ding-Dong! The Witch Is… fiery, misunderstood… and possess an extraordinary talent.

4. Chicago – September 15 to 20, 2020

Transporting us back to the roaring ’20s and the story of two rival vaudevillian murderesses locked up in Cook County Jail, Chicago, the multi-awarding winning Broadway show that launched the smash-hit movie, follows Velma and Roxie (said murderesses) go head-to-head with the hopes of becoming the next big star. Enlisting prison matron Mama Morton and the slickster lawyer in town, Billy Flynn to help turn their incarceration into a media frenzy proves glitz, glamour and murder never looked so good. Trust us, you’ll be doing back flips, flip flops, one right after the other for this one.

5. Jesus Christ Superstar – October 28 to November 1, 2020

The global phenomenon and multi-awarding winning production, Jesus Christ Superstar was originally a 1970 rock opera album by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice before its transition into the classic Broadway hit musical. The story, told entirely through song, is set against the backdrop of an extraordinary series of events during the final weeks in the life of Jesus Christ as seen through the eyes of Judas. Exploring personal relationships and struggles, this one-of-a-kind production has been deemed uniquely fresh and inspiring.

6. Anastasia – January 19 to 24, 2021

Inspired by the beloved films, Anastaia takes us on a journey to the euphoria of Paris in the 1920s as a young woman sets out to discover the truth about her past. Intertwined with mystery and misfortune, and a rather creepy Soviet officer determined to silence her, Anya must put her trust in a stranger as they embark on this memorizing adventure for answers. Once Upon a December may be a hit classic from this production, but Hurry Up January 2021 is what we’re belting out.

7. Come From Away – March 9 to 21, 2021

Based on a true story and a community that welcomed the world, Come From Away, winner of the Best Musical all across North America, tells the remarkable tale of 7,000 stranded passengers following the 9/11 attacks and the small town in Newfoundland that helped them. This breathtaking new musical sees cultures clash, compassion erupt, and connections form that would last forever.

8. Alexander Hamilton – June 22 to July 25, 2020

Making its New York debut off-Broadway at the Public Theatre in 2015, Hamilton captivates audiences with the extraordinary tale of an immigrant (Alexander Hamilton) from the West Indies who became George Washington’s right-hand man during the Revolutionary War and was the new nation’s first Treasury Secretary. With book, music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the Grammy®-, Tony®- and Olivier-Award winning production features blends of hip-hop, jazz, blues, rap, R&B and Broadway and is a true modern masterpiece.
