Vancouver Adventures: Our Picks for February 4-10

1. Adam Ant: Kings of the Wild Frontier Live – Saturday, February 4

Prince Charming is here to Stand And Deliver his ’80s post-punk pop hits to a nostalgic crowd at the Vogue. Expect 18th-century attire and lots of synchronized dance attempts when Adam Ant is in in town. All ages are welcome at the show and tickets are available at Red Cat Records.

2. Winter Wander – Saturday, February 4

Take the family to Vanier Park for a day of educational entertainment. Five bucks gets you admission to the Museum of Vancouver, H.R. MacMillan Space Centre, Vancouver Maritime Museum, Vancouver Academy of Music and the City of Vancouver Archives. Performances from the Young Shakespeareans from Bard on the Beach and storytelling by VPL will also be happening, alongside ball hockey, origami classes and food trucks to enjoy.
10 a.m. to 4 p.m., kids under 5 are free, Vanier Park, Kitsilano.

3. Canada vs. Mexico – Saturday, February 4

This weekend, check out world-class women’s soccer as Canada takes on Mexico. Watch as these two passionate teams battle it out on the field in celebration of the bronze medal match from the 2016 Rio Olympics. The event will feature the Olympics squad, including retiring players Melissa Tancredi, Rhian Wilkinson, and Marie-Eve Nault.

4. BC Truffle Festival – Saturday, February 4 to Monday, February 6

Mmm… truffles. Celebrate the sensationally stinky fungi with a range of special events such as truffle dog demos at UBC Farm, a truffle expedition and dinner at Chaberton Winery, Langley and a gala dinner at West.
Truffle Day at the UBC Farm, Feb. 4, 1 to 4 p.m.; dinner at Chaberton Winery, Feb. 5, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.; gala dinner at West Restaurant, Feb. 6 6:30 to 10 p.m.

 

5. Beta 5 Chocolates pop-up shop – Now until Tuesday, February 14

V-Day is fast approaching and Beta 5’s pop-up shop will make all your sweet dreams come true. Visit their temporary Cambie Street location to pick up Valentine’s-themed cream puffs (strawberry and jasmine flavour) as well as a limited selection of their pastries and chocolates.

6. Tiny House Demonstration – Tuesday, February 7

Thinking of really downsizing? Samantha Gambling, tiny homeowner and co-founder of the BC Tiny House Collective, will be moderating a discussion all about tiny house construction, high-performance building methods and green tech, and how tiny houses can meet cities’ sustainable targets. Samantha Gambling’s tiny house will also be on display.

7. Ada/Ava – Tuesday, February 7

Chicago-based theatre company Manual Cinema will showcase their innovative storytelling in Ada/Ava with a combination of shadow puppetry, multimedia and live ensemble music to tell the mysterious story of the elderly Ava and the ghost of her cherished twin sister Ava, who comes back to haunt her. Working with vintage projectors, live-camera feeds and multi-channel sound effects, Manual Cinema weaves this spine-tingling yet sentimental tale.

8. Kinky Boots – Tuesday, Febraury 7 to Sunday, February 12

From Broadway Across Canada, the Grammy- and Tony-award winning musical, Kinky Boots is coming to the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. Follow Charlie Price as he tries to live up to his father’s expectations and help the struggling family shoe business. To help save the shoe company is Lola, an amazing performer that is need of a sturdy and fabulous set of stilettos.

9. The Edible Museum of Canadian Food and Wine – Thursday, February 9

Check out the Edible Museum of Canadian Food and Wine for one night only. The two-storey pop-up museum features edible exhibits, interactive timelines and immersive vignettes, such as a traditional Okanagan (Syilx) Nation pit-house of the Osoyoos Indian Band and a Quebec sugar shack. Learn about the origins of poutine and discover the history for Canadian cuisine from First Nations to French Canadians, with small bites from local chefs and B.C. wines.

Tickets ($22 plus tax and fees) for the 7:00 p.m. entry are sold out, but there is a waitlist for the 7:30 p.m. entry. All ticket sales from this pop-up will be donated to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank

 

10. Slide Show – Friday, February 10

Relive your own meeting room hell and see the funny side of being ill-prepared at Slide Show: A Night of Improvised Powerpoint Comedy, where improvisors make up presentations to slides they’ve never seen before. Catch the Blind Tiger House Team sketch show at 7 p.m. then stick around for the slideshow fun.
