What to Watch This Week: April 3 to 8

From romantic thrill rides to Disney docs, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. All the Old Knives – Prime Video

Prime VideoChris Pine mixes espionage and romance in this much-anticipated thriller from director Janus Metz (ZeroZeroZero). Here, the Star Trek and Wonder Woman alum plays a CIA agent who crosses paths again with a former lover and colleague (played by Westworld’s Thandiwe Newton) after she’s accused of being a double agent who was involved with a terrorist plane hijacking eight years ago. When the pair reconnect and reexamine their relationship, they both realize their memories might not be as reliable as they once thought. It’s all based on a 2015 novel of the same name by Olen Steinhauer. 

The A-list cast also includes Laurence Fishburne and Jonathan Pryce; at the end of the day though, All the Old Knives is Mr. Pine’s baby. “By far, this was one of the better scripts I have ever read,” he gushed to Variety. “It’s just beautifully written. It’s one of those scripts that you finish and you realize nothing needs to be changed and you have no notes. That is so rare. It’s really a great yarn. It’s a great puzzle. It’s a great whodunit. I remember reading it and being so surprised at how it ends. And it’s a really old-fashioned love story that I grew up watching and that we all love. It’s Casablanca. It’s The English Patient. Or any of those sweeping love stories. But it just so happens to be wrapped up in this really fun puzzle.”

2. Embrace the Panda: Making Turning Red – Disney+

Disney+This feature-length documentary looks at the all-female creative team at the helm of the new Pixar film Turning Red. With behind-the-scenes access to director Domee Shi and her core leadership crew, this doc shines a light on the powerful professional and personal journeys that brought this incredibly comical, utterly relatable and deeply heartfelt story to the screen.

3. Moonfall – Prime Video

Prime VideoWhen a mysterious force sends the moon hurtling on a world-ending collision course with Earth, former astronaut Jo Fowler (Halle Berry) enlists her fellow ex-astronaut (Patrick Wilson) and a wacky conspiracy theorist (John Bradley) for an impossible last-ditch mission into space.

4. The Bubble – Netflix

NetflixThe latest from director Judd Apatow (The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Trainwreck, Knocked Up, etc.) delves into the behind-the-scenes experience of filming a big-budget blockbuster within the new pandemic reality brought about by COVID-19, reportedly based on what actually happened when the pandemic left the cast and crew of Jurassic World: Dominion languishing for months in Britain. Guardians of the Galaxy’s Karen Gillan and Narcos’ Pedro Pascal play the lead actors in the dinosaur action sequel Cliff Beasts 6: The Battle for Everest: Memories of a Requiem, who get stranded at a hotel when the pandemic halts production.  

Meanwhile, Leslie Mann and David Duchovny play a divorced acting couple forced to quarantine together. Additional stars include Iris Apatow, Fred Armisen, Keegan-Michael Key, Peter Serafinowicz, Vir Das, Rob Delaney and Maria Bakalova, in her first American screen appearance since her Oscar-nominated performance as Tutar in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

5. Trivia Quest – Netflix

NetflixBased on the popular online game Trivia Crack, this interactive animated series takes viewers through 24 questions each day throughout the month of April, covering a broad range of categories, from pop culture to science and more. Like previous interactive Netflix specials such as Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend, viewers’ answers will determine the fate of a lovable animated character named Willy as he tries to rescue the folks of Trivia Land from Evil Rocky, who’s intent on collecting all the world’s knowledge for sinister purposes. As viewers reach different checkpoints, Evil Rocky’s prisoners are slowly released.

6. Murder On the Orient Express – Monday, April 4, 8 p.m., CTV2

CTV2Based on Agatha Christie’s 1934 novel, director Kenneth Branagh brings new life to one of the most popular mysteries of all time, as Belgian sleuth Hercule Poirot (Branagh) is forced to solve a murder aboard a moving locomotive.

7. Tony Hawk: Until the Wheels Fall Off – Tuesday, April 5, 8 p.m. & 11 p.m., HBO Canada

HBO CanadaAn all-encompassing look at the life and career of skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, this new HBO film explores his relationship with the sport with which he’s been synonymous for decades. Featuring never-before-seen archival footage, the doc chronicles Hawk’s meteoric rise from awkward teen outsider in the radical sport of the 1980s to multiple X Games gold medalist, trick innovator, entrepreneur and 12-time National Skateboard Association world champ. Celebrating Hawk’s single-minded pursuit of his passion and his refusal to bend to the reality of middle age, Until the Wheels Fall Off also reveals the perils of fame and the constant threat to his physical well-being.

8. The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On – Wednesday, April 6, Netflix | Series Premiere

NetflixIf you’re still buzzing about that shocking turn of events between Deepti and Shake on the second season of Love Is Blind and are hungry for another series to utterly take over your life, Netflix can oblige. In fact, The Ultimatum hails from the very same master manipulators who gave us Love Is Blind, with Nick and Vanessa Lachey even returning as hosts. 

The premise: six couples who are at an impasse over whether to get married finally agree to stop their dawdling and make a decision: wed or break up. But first, they’ll choose someone else to move in with for three weeks to see if the grass really is greener on the other side. “You’re here because someone in your relationship has issued an ultimatum,” Vanessa says in the trailer. “One partner is ready to get married, and the other isn’t sure.”  

Relationships, of course, are complex. Each has its own unique challenges. But one thing we’re absolutely sure about: reality TV is the best way to work through those challenges.  

The show’s first eight episodes launch this week, while the final two and a reunion special drop on April 13th.

9. The Dropout – Thursday, April 7, Disney+

Disney+This dramatic retelling of the Theranos scandal unveils its eighth and final episode, as CEO Elizabeth Holmes answers for her fraud. Tune in to watch a Silicon Valley empire crumble, to ponder the lives left ruined in its rubble and, of course, to hear Amanda Seyfried totally nail Holmes’ peculiar voice one last time.

10. Central Park – Friday, April 8, Apple TV+ | Season Finale

Apple TV+Fans won’t want to miss what promises to be an extra-grand finale of the animated musical comedy’s second season. In fact, in a recent interview with CBR.com, star/co-creator Josh Gad teased, “I think it’s the biggest thing we’ve done so far.”
