From adorable prom-posals to hilarious COVID comics, we round up the top 10 shows to watch this week

1. Greenland – Amazon Prime Video

Originally intended for theatrical release, this action-packed disaster-thriller follows a family fighting for survival as a massive comet is on a collision course with Earth, threatening to devastate the planet and all its inhabitants. John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his estranged wife Allison (Morena Baccarin) and young son Nathan (Roger Dale Floyd) make a perilous journey to their only hope for sanctuary. Amid terrifying news reports of cities around the world being levelled by the comet’s massive fragments, this fractured family experiences the best and worst in humanity while they battle the increasing panic and lawlessness surrounding them. As the countdown to global apocalypse approaches zero, their incredible trek culminates in a desperate and last-minute flight to a possible safe haven in Greenland.

Helmed by Ric Roman Waugh (who previously directed Butler’s 2019 film Angel Has Fallen), Greenland also stars Scott Glenn, David Denman and Hope Davis.

2. Tiffany Haddish Presents They Ready – Netflix

Haddish returns for season two of her comedy showcase, using her movie-star cred to give a little boost to some worthy, under-seen standups. This year’s slate includes Dean Edwards, Kimberly Clark (pictured), Tony Woods, Barbara Carlyle, Erin Jackson and Godfrey.

3. Super Bowl LV – Sunday, February 7, 3:30 p.m., CTV, TSN1 & CBS

There’s no denying that Canada’s own R&B superstar The Weeknd had quite a monumental year in 2020. Between a hit album (After Hours) and his latest batch of buzz-worthy music videos, the man stayed on top of the headlines and the charts. So it was a surprise to fans (and fellow musicians like Drake and Elton John) when he failed to be nominated for even a single Grammy at the upcoming March gala. But while the Academy may have snubbed him, the NFL certainly did not, booking the Toronto native as the main event in its Super Bowl festivities.

Watch the whole epic clash between Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs, or just drop in for halftime, where Mr. Weeknd (and probably a few special guests) will try to offer a spectacle worthy of football’s biggest night.

4. Chris Rock: Kill the Messenger – Sunday, February 7, 10 p.m., HBO Canada

If you enjoyed revisiting Rock’s Tamborine special when Netflix renamed and re-released it a few weeks back, why not give his 2008 HBO set another look? Shot in London, New York and South Africa, it finds Rock riffing on gas prices, ringtones and the “possibility” of a Black president.

5. Black Lightning – Monday, February 8, 9 p.m., The CW | Season Premiere

Ground yourselves, Arrow-verse fans, because after nearly an entire year’s wait, the fourth and final season of this electrifying comic book drama is here. Principal Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) and his super-powered family are back to wrap up their saga, while also introducing a potential spinoff centred on the antiheroic Painkiller (Jordan Calloway); watch for that backdoor pilot to air as an episode later this season—but first, there are some big changes in store.

Among them is a general lack of Jennifer Pierce, given that actor China Anne McClain has decided to move on and will only appear in a handful of episodes. Meanwhile, as fans already know, one of Freeland’s few good cops, Bill Henderson (Damon Gupton), has exited the series following that run-in with a Markovian soldier in the last finale.

As for the overall direction the story will take in this farewell chapter? Expect the writers to dig into the metahuman boarding school which got congressional approval at the end of season three.

6. Diana: The Interview That Shocked the World – Tuesday, February 9, BritBox (Stream)

This new documentary takes a deep dive into the circumstances that led to Princess Diana’s scorched-earth 1995 interview with BBC’s Panorama, sharing revelations that rocked the Royal Family and continue to reverberate today.

7. Humour Resources – Tuesday, February 12, 9:30 p.m., CBC | Season Finale

Jon Dore’s COVID-inspired series about the standup world’s clueless human resources manager logs off for season one, as Dore Zoom-chats with the likes of Nikki Glaser and Reggie Watts about teamwork, hygiene and white, bearded male comics.

8. Tough as Nails – Wednesday, February 10, 8 p.m., Global & CBS | Season Premiere

The Amazing Race‘s Phil Keoghan returns to give a new batch of hardnosed workers the chance to put their “strength, endurance and mental toughness” to the test for some cash. Competitors in season two include a steelworker, a pipe welder, a travel nurse, a UPS delivery driver and a retired Air Force colonel.

9. Buried by the Bernards – Friday, February 12, Netflix | Series Premiere

Described by Netflix as a “reality comedy,” this new series follows the exploits of flamboyant funeral director Ryan Bernard and his bickering family as they run their “budget-friendly” funeral home in Memphis, hosting affordable funerals for members of the community.

10. To All the Boys: Always and Forever – Friday, February 12, Netflix

The first film was a sleeper hit for Netflix back in 2018; now, the franchise based on Jenny Han’s young adult novels says goodbye as a genuine blockbuster, with this third and final chapter.

When the heartfelt teen saga picks back up, Lara (Lana Condor) is in Korea, on the trip of a lifetime with her sisters. But back home, she has some big decisions in front of her—some of which are easier (prom) than others (college). Judging by the previews, it looks as though that latter issue is going to be a source of contention between Lara and Peter (Noah Centineo) once Lara returns to school, as her vision for the future doesn’t exactly line up with his. Can the couple make long distance work if he goes to Stanford and she winds up in New York? The path is uncertain, but at the very least, early looks suggest we’ll get to witness an epic prom for these young lovebirds, following a very suave “prom-posal” by Peter.
