What to Watch This Week: January 6 to 11

From LiLo’s reality return to the launch of awards season, we round up the top 10 shows to watch this week

1. The 76th Annual Golden Globe Awards – Sunday, January 6, 8 p.m., CTV & NBC

Just as you’re recovering from the holiday season, there is another reason to be jolly: It’s once again the beginning of awards season! Hosted by Sandra Oh and Andy Samberg, this year’s ceremony showcases nominees on the film side that range from box-office hits to more obscure discoveries. Bradley Cooper’s directorial debut, the fourth iteration of A Star Is Born, is nominated in all major categories, including Best Drama, acting nods for Cooper and Lady Gaga, a directing nod for Cooper and a nomination for the original song “Shallow,” which should have you singing along till late February with its anticipated winning streak.

Other commercial hits that are being recognized this year celebrate diversity in the film industry: Superhero blockbuster Black Panther clawed its way to a billion at the box office in just 26 days and became the highest-grossing film of 2018 in the U.S. and Canada. The loosely factual Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody recounts the transition of Zanzibar-born Freddie Bulsara’s into the legendary Freddie Mercury. And the highest-grossing rom-com in a decade, Crazy Rich Asians, includes the nomination for an Asian actress (Fresh Off the Boat star Constance Wu) in the lead character in 44 years.

2. The Simpsons – Sunday, January 6, 8 p.m., Fox

After he sees some green army men while babysitting Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, Grampa Simpson suddenly has a PTSD flashback to the war… well, the post-war actually, when he served as a toy model. Suddenly, the whole family is tumbling down the rabbit hole of one of Grampa’s trademark stories.

3. The Bachelor – Monday, January 7, 8 p.m., ABC I Season Premiere

When Colton Underwood was officially confirmed as the next Bachelor, the news didn’t come without the usual controversy. The former NFL player’s intentions were certainly in question (he does have two famous exes in the form of gymnast Aly Raisman and former Bachelor contestant Tia Booth, after all), but an even bigger question from fans was what kind of a leading man would he make considering that he’s still a virgin? After all, as we all know, plenty of viewers rely on those salacious fantasy-suite episodes to whet their appetites. And it seems the network is more than willing to capitalize on that part of it considering the fact that the latest journey to find love is kicking off with a three-hour live special this week. In it, Colton sits down with returning host Chris Harrison to have a frank chat about the backlash he received from fans after he was announced as the next Bachelor, and why he’s anxious about the season ahead.

Meanwhile we’ll also be introduced to the very lively group of blushing bachelorettes ready to make a play for Colton’s heart, some of whom will be prepared to do anything to get noticed. By the end of the first night the group of 30 women, which includes a 29-year-old dog rescuer from Vancouver, a California girl who has never been kissed, and both Miss North Carolina and Miss Alabama 2018, will be whittled down to 23. The fun doesn’t stop this week though. The show also promises plenty of international romps throughout the season, from trysts in Thailand to parties in Portugal, while also welcoming two celebrity couple super Bachelor fans: Megan Mullally and Nick Offerman, as well as Terry and Rebecca Crews. Now what’s not to love about that?

4. Coroner – Monday, January 7, 9 p.m., CBC I Series Premiere

Set in Toronto and based on the Jenny Cooper novels by M.R. Hall, the series stars Ballers and Marvel’s Inhumans actress Serinda Swan as a newly widowed coroner who, between puzzling autopsies, deals with the impact of her husband’s death on her and her teenage son.

5. Property Brothers: Buying & Selling – Monday, January 7, 9 p.m., HGTV I Season Premiere

When it comes to contractor-realtor duos, there’s no denying that Drew and Jonathan Scott have pretty much got the competition beat. Canada’s infamous twins continue to take North America by storm with TV shows, a furniture line, and even as the spokes-guys for a certain bank, proving that their charm knows no bounds. So we’re certainly happy for them to take up some of our viewing real estate with the fifth season premiere of this particular home reno show, which features the dynamic duo sprucing up old abodes to sell while working wonders on the market as they help homeowners find their new dream homes. It all kicks off with a couple that wants to leave their rural 10-acre, 200-year-old farmhouse in order to secure a turnkey property closer to their friends and work. While we’re sure such a property exits for them, we have a feeling that by the end of the hour we’ll all be chomping at the bit to live the farm life once we see what dazzling upgrades the brothers have made to the older property.

6. Ellen’s Game of Games – Tuesday, January 8, 7 p.m., CTV; 8 p.m., NBC I Season Premiere

It’s “game on” again for Ellen DeGeneres, and also for players who may be headed for a fall. Dropping out of the contest—literally—is a feature of Ellen’s Game of Games, beginning its second season Tuesday. The well-rated show had a December holiday edition, but new games are added this season as 30-time Emmy-winner DeGeneres again puts competitors to various tests as a timer counts down to zero. Those who complete the tasks can win big money… and those who don’t? Well, the floor really drops out from under them.

7. Kim’s Convenience – Tuesday, January 8, 8 p.m. CBC I Season Premiere

As we pick back up with the Kim family for season three, Janet decides to change her name, Jung struggles to get his job back at Handy, while Umma and Appa prepare to purchase a new dishwasher—though Appa, naturally, is obsessed with getting the best deal.

8. Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club – Tuesday, January 8, 9 p.m., MTV Canada I Series Premiere

She’s been a mean girl on a Freaky Friday and even solicited the help of Oprah Winfrey with a self-titled docu-series, but this week Lindsay Lohan is embarking on yet another new career journey, one that takes her to a pretty if unlikely place: Greece. Yup, the fallen movie star is back on the reality circuit, this time with a foray into the opening of her VIP luxury vacation retreat on the Greek island of Mykonos. But she isn’t doing it alone. She’ll be joined by a “handpicked team” of young staffers as they run the club while also navigating romance, friendship, and the blurred line between work and play. Basically, it sounds exactly like the kind of series we’d expect from Lohan at this point, no?

9. Schitt’s Creek – Tuesday, January 8, 9 p.m., CBC I Season Premiere

The show kicks off its fifth season this week, and the Roses are finally managing to make life in Schitt’s Creek work pretty darned well. Moira’s film shoot in Bosnia went well enough that she’s ready to get the heck out of town for good, but also wants to make sure she leaves her mark before she goes. Johnny’s managerial efforts have turned around the state of the Rosebud Motel, although his staff’s performance remains less than desirable. David is doing his best to make things between him and Patrick as solid as possible, while Alexis’s relationship with Ted is doing eerily well, though that doesn’t stop her from trying to kick things up a notch and—like her mother—consider what sort of future she might be able to find outside of Schitt’s Creek. Business as usual? Not hardly.

10. Burden of Truth – Wednesday, January 9, 8 p.m, CBC I Season Premiere

Kristin Kreuk is back in court as attorney Joanna Hanley for the second season of her Winnipeg-shot legal drama, which returns with plenty of changes in store. Following Hanley’s headline-generating case fighting for five sick girls in her hometown, she returns for a fresh start as a new lawyer at one of the top firms in The Peg. But when a client draws her into the shady world of hackers, activists, and a political movement with little room for prisoners, she eventually finds herself a killer’s next target.

The show’s second season also welcomes a slew of new ones. Joining returning stars Peter Mooney, Alex Carter, Star Slade and Sara Thompson are Michelle Nolden (Saving Hope) as Hanley’s new mentor and boss, Varun Saranga (Wynonna Earp) as a new client, Andrew Chown (Beauty and the Beast) as Billy’s brother, and Raymond Ablack (Orphan Black) as a young lawyer at the firm.
