What to Watch This Week: May 15 to 20

From spooky sci-fi to heroic first responders, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. 2022 Billboard Music Awards – Sunday, May 15, 5 p.m., NBC; 8 p.m., CTV & NBC

CTVWhile Simu Liu hosts the Junos in T.O., Sean “Diddy” Combs will be doing the same for Billboard in Sin City, where many of the same Canadian hit-makers (like Bieber and The Weeknd) are up for top honours, along with Olivia Rodrigo and Doja Cat. Will Biebs et al. be able to resist the seedy allure of Vegas in the name of national pride?

2. The 2022 Juno Awards – Sunday, May 15, 5 p.m., CBC & CBC Gem (Stream)

CBCIf the Oscars and Grammys can make a return to in-person events, then why shouldn’t Canada’s most prestigious music show follow suit? For their first non-virtual gala since 2019, organizers have recruited Marvel action hero (and former Kim’s Convenience star) Simu Liu as emcee. “It’s an absolute honour to be hosting the 51st annual Juno Awards,” Liu said. “Canadian entertainment and culture hold a very important place in my heart and getting the chance to experience the festivities in my hometown makes the experience even more special to me.”  

The hardware will be doled out from the Budweiser Stage at Ontario Place, where some of our home and native land’s top acts are set to perform. One recognizable face that’s sure to drop by is Shawn Mendes, who is being honoured with the International Achievement Award. The 23-year-old “Treat You Better” singer is already an 11-time Juno winner, but here he’s being fêted for contributions to the global music scene over his storied eight-year career. “Accepting this award will be a surreal moment,” the Pickering native said in a press release. “To be recognized for my work not only in Canada, but around the world, is a tremendous honour and I am humbled to join an outstanding group of artists who have helped put Canadian music on the map.”  

Turning to the evening’s actual, competitive categories, Mendes will also take on the likes of Justin Bieber, Charlotte Cardin, JP Saxe and Tate McRae for Album of the Year—and all of those people plus The Weeknd for Artist of the Year.

3. 9-1-1 – Monday, May 16, 8 p.m., Global & Fox | Season Finale

GlobalSeason five reaches its conclusion, as 9-1-1 operator Maddie contemplates a return to work and the valiant firefighters of Station 118 grapple with an array of calamities, including a hair-salon debacle and a wellness guru under attack by his followers. In other news, Eddie, May, Buck and Taylor all face big decisions, before a “surprise wedding.”

4. Lovestruck High – Wednesday, May 18, Prime Video

Prime VideoWith Netflix having entered the fray of reality dating via such outlandish series as Love Is Blind and The Ultimatum, it was only a matter of time before one of its biggest streaming competitors got into the game too. This week marks the debut of Amazon’s first-ever romance competition and—based on the trailers alone—the Internet has lots of thoughts.  

As you’d expect, the show follows a group of singles who come together to flirt it up—but with a high-concept twist. Despite all being adults, the contestants will search for love via a series of high-school-themed challenges, trying out for cheerleading, going on dates at the diner and, finally, getting all dolled up and heading to prom; whichever couple is crowned Prom King and Queen also gets a $100,000 prize. Another little wrinkle: though these singles are all from the U.K., their “school” is in America.  

The series is being lauded for its inclusive, LGBTQ+ cast—plus, Lindsay Lohan narrates, which is a ‘totally’ fetch bonus for all you Mean Girls fans out there.

5. The Masked Singer – Wednesday, May 18, 8 p.m., CTV & Fox | Season Finale

CTVNow that we all know Rudy Giuliani really did cause Ken Jeong to vacate the stage during his unmasking in April, do we even care who wins? Of course we do! With the final contestants taking the mic and at least one more jaw-dropping reveal in store, we need to know whether any of our other celeb predictions come true.

6. So You Think You Can Dance – Wednesday, May 18, 7 p.m., City; 9:01 p.m., Fox | Season Premiere

CityIt’s been a minute since Fox’s TV dance competition last aired, and now it’s finally returned, with some new faces behind the judging table. Host Cat Deeley is joined by returning judge Stephen “tWitch” Boss (who got his start on the show way back when) and a couple of newbies: Emmy-, Tony- and Golden Globe-nominated Glee star Matthew Morrison and dancer, singer and recent Dancing With the Stars finalist JoJo Siwa.

7. The Boss Baby: Back in the Crib – Thursday, Netflix | Series Premiere

NetflixIt seems like only yesterday that DreamWorks released The Boss Baby: Family Business into theatres, but that’s probably just because the pandemic has completely distorted our concept of time. In fact, it’s been almost a year (the film came out July 2, 2021), which is still kind of a quick turnaround for Netflix to have a new Boss Baby TV series ready to roll, but… well, that’s what franchises are all about, right? Just as they followed up the original Boss Baby series with The Boss Baby: Back in Business, now they’re following up Family Business with Back in the Crib.  

In the wake of the film’s events, pint-sized business tycoon Theodore Templeton—voiced by J.P. Karliak, continuing to carry the rattle first held by Alec Baldwin—is framed for embezzlement and has little choice but to bounce back into his former Boss Baby self and hang with his brother Tim and his two nieces, Tabitha and fellow Baby Corp employee Tina. Now, Boss Baby and Tina are leading a new “field team” to keep the so-called Uncuddleables from destroying their company. 

Joining the cast are Nailed It!’s Nicole Byer as a character referred to as “NannyCam No Filter CEO Baby,” along with Friday Night Lights’ Kyle Chandler and Conan’s Andy Richter.

8. Dual – Friday, May 20, AMC+ (Stream)

AMC+In this dark comedy set in the not-too-distant future, a young woman named Sarah (Karen Gillan of Guardians of the Galaxy fame) is diagnosed with a terminal illness and given just months to live. Availing herself of cutting-edge technology, she agrees to undergo a cloning procedure so that a perfect replica of herself can live on in order to lessen the trauma to her loved ones. Her plan hits a snag, however, when she makes a miraculous recovery—while her ambitious clone has already charmed her mother and boyfriend (who both prefer the new Sarah to the old one).  

She then discovers the law dictates a clone and the original cannot exist simultaneously, a dilemma that can only be solved with a court-mandated duel to the death. With the fight of her life scheduled to take place in one year, Sarah enlists the services of trainer Trent (Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul) to teach her the skills she’ll need to become a merciless killing machine and, hopefully, the victor at the end of a vicious battle that will leave just one Sarah standing.

9. Night Sky – Friday, May 20, Prime Video | Series Premiere

Prime VideoWhat would you do if you suddenly found yourself with access to a whole other world, a beautiful but utterly deserted planet that could be visited via a hidden portal? Would you notify the authorities of this momentous discovery, or keep it to yourself? 

That’s the premise of Night Sky, an eight-part sci-fi series in which Irene and Franklin York (Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons) have chosen the latter, having years ago discovered a mysterious chamber in their backyard that allows them to visit the planet. They’ve carefully maintained their secret for ages, splitting their time between the typical activities of modern-day life and the strange world that has somehow become part of their existence.   

“There’s this toggling back and forth between, in the story of the mundane of everyday life—going to doctor’s office and food shopping—mixed with this beautiful escapist dream fantasy,” explained showrunner Daniel C. Connolly during a recent interview with Town & Country. 

 Everything changes when an enigmatic young man (Chai Hansen) enters the picture, causing the Yorks’ quiet lives to become upended, as the mystifying chamber that the couple thought they knew so well turns out to be considerably more than they ever could have imagined. 

As Irene’s curiosity gets the better of her, she begins to investigate, forcing her to come to grips with some harsh truths about the seemingly benign alien landscape they’ve used all these years as an escape from their day-to-day boredom. 

“Obviously, most, if not all of us, do not have a portal to outer space in our backyard,” added series writer Holden Miller, “but we all do have access to those same grand questions that these characters are grappling with. And it’s the same ones that we all are.”

10. The Valet – Friday, May 20, Disney+

Disney+A world-famous movie star (Samara Weaving) faces a public relations nightmare when a paparazzi photo emerges of her with her married lover (Max Greenfield). To throw the tabloids off the scent, she enlists a parking valet (Eugenio Derbez) to pose as her boyfriend—and winds up falling for him.
