From honouring a Supreme to examining America, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

From honouring a Supreme to examining America, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. Poldark on Masterpiece – Sunday, November 19, 6 p.m. & 10 p.m., WTVS; 9 p.m., KCTS | Season Finale

The love triangle between Demelza, Hugh Armitage and Captain Ross Poldark hits a crescendo in the third-season finale, forcing the leading lady to make a big decision and giving us all plenty to stew over as we wait for season four.

2. 2017 American Music Awards – Sunday, November 19, 8 p.m., CTV & ABC

It may not be the Grammys, but there are still plenty of reasons to tune in for this fan-voted gala—most prominently, the honouring of a genuine legend. This year, Diana Ross receives the AMA for Lifetime Achievement. Considering the singer was in attendance at the very first AMAs back in 1974, hosted the show twice in 1986 and 1987 and also graced the stage with her songs several times in between, it’s a fitting pick. Plus it means Ross will be on hand to deliver another, increasingly rare live performance.

Another major highlight this year: Christina Aguilera will pay tribute to the late Whitney Houston and her iconic work in The Bodyguard, as the film/soundtrack celebrates its 25th anniversary. Houston’s estate is thrilled with the choice, noting: “Whitney herself stated in 2001 that Christina Aguilera sang the best version of her song ‘Run to You.’”

3. Madam Secretary – Sunday, November 19, 10 p.m., Global & CBS

For many seasons, fans have known Sara Ramirez as the bold, beautiful and sometimes brash orthopedic surgeon Callie Torres on Grey’s Anatomy. This week, Ramirez joins Téa Leoni on the CBS political drama. She’ll play Kat Sandoval, a brilliant political strategist who—when we first meet her—has quit a high powered D.C. gig for reasons unknown, disappearing from the Hill entirely. That is, until Elizabeth comes calling, looking to shake up her own White House staff. While Ramirez’s return is certainly highly anticipated, her fans may need a second to recognize the actress; this character comes with a whole new look and we kind of dig it.

4. Elizabeth Smart: Questions Answered – Monday, November 20, 7 p.m. & 11:03 p.m., A&E

For many parents, there’s nothing so terrifying as the thought of your child being abducted out of his or her own bedroom. Yet that’s the real-life horror that befell Elizabeth Smart and her family 15 years ago, when the then-14-year-old went missing in Salt Lake City and wasn’t found again until nine months later. Although the horror of what she went through during that time has been discussed extensively in the media, this week viewers will have the chance to pose their own questions about the event in a televised special. There to shepherd the conversation along and to pose some questions of his own is Dr. Drew Pinsky, the celebrity M.D. who has long made a TV career of doing these sorts of things.

5. Dancing with the Stars – Monday, November 20, 8 p.m., City & ABC; Tuesday, November, 21, 9 p.m., ABC | Season Finale

It’s been an interesting run of ups, downs, injuries and flops, but now the viewers and the judges are ready to make the final call during this week’s two-night finale. With the mirror ball trophy on the line, it’s still anyone’s season.

6. Chicago Med – Monday, November 20, 9 p.m., Global; Tuesday, November 21, 10:01 p.m., NBC | Season Premiere

Chicago Med finally returns for its third season, a little later than usual… and boy, what a year for the network to delay their premiere. When we last left the team of doctors and medical professionals, it was without knowing the fate of Dr. Charles, who had been shot by an angry former psych patient. We’ll learn quickly enough, but whether he survives or not, the repercussions of such an attack will inevitably ripple throughout the rest of the season. What that means for Dr. Sarah Reese, who was learning under the man, is unclear; she may be in the market for a new mentor. Meanwhile, there’s plenty of other action to look forward to over the course of 20 new episodes, beginning with the struggles facing Dr. Will Halstead as he navigates his gig as the ER’s supervising attending physician and his new romance with the emergency pediatrics resident, Dr. Natalie Manning.

7. Saving Capitalism – Tuesday, Netflix

It’s no secret that America is a divided nation, with liberal and conservative viewpoints so diametrically opposed that the very idea of any bipartisanship in D.C. seems laughable. With that in mind, this documentary follows former U.S. Secretary of Labour Robert Reich (who served in the administrations of Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton) as he exits his liberal “bubble” and journeys to the American heartland in hopes of finding common ground at this critical time in U.S. history.

8. Marvel’s Runaways – Wednesday, November 22, 5 p.m. & 6 p.m. (repeating at 8 p.m. & 9 p.m.), Showcase | Series Premiere

Every teenager thinks their parents are evil at one time or another, but what if yours actually were? In the latest TV adaptation from Marvel Comics, six teens from different backgrounds are forced to unite when they discover their parents are part of a mysterious crime organization doing some bad, bad things.

The show opens on Alex Wilder (Rhenzy Feliz), a nerdy kid who longs to reunite with his childhood friends after a tragedy tore them apart. In typical high school fashion, it’s not shared trauma but their wildly different personalities that now keep them from pursuing a meaningful friendship. Nico Minoru (Lyrica Okano) is a goth doing her best to isolate herself from others; Chase Stein (Gregg Sulkin) is a popular jock and too cool for his old crew; Gert Yorkes (Ariela Barer) is an outspoken feminist out for social justice on the high school campus; Karolina Dean (Virginia Gardner), the daughter of the leader of a cult-like religious group, is the perpetual “good girl”; and Molly Hernandez (Allegra Acosta) is too young to properly fit in. From the showrunners of such teen dramas as The O.C. and Gossip Girl, Runaways is an opportunity to take a Marvel show and put it through the prism of teen angst.

9. She’s Gotta Have It – Thursday, November 23, Netflix | Series Premiere

Netflix neophytes looking for a reason to subscribe to the streaming service need look no further than the directorial credits attached to some of their recent original series: following in the footsteps of David Fincher on Mindhunter, Spike Lee will be helming all 10 episodes of the new adaptation of his classic big-screen debut, She’s Gotta Have It.

Although Lee has updated the premise slightly to contemporize things, the characters remain the same: the series follows Nola Darling (DeWanda Wise), a 20-something artist living in Brooklyn who’s trying to balance her friends, her job and her three lovers: Greer the model (Cleo Anthony), Jamie the investment banker (Lyriq Bent) and the one and only Mars Blackmon, played by Lee in the film but now portrayed by Anthony Ramos.

10. Dreamworks Trolls Holiday – Friday, November 24, 8:30 p.m., NBC

In this new holiday special, based on the CGI family movie Trolls, Troll queen Poppy (voice of Anna Kendrick) casts about to find a new holiday to be celebrated by the citizens of Bergen Town—but will her fellow Trolls warm to such festivities as Ticklepalooza or Balloon Squeal Day?
