From Emmy darlings to reputable news sources, here are our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. The Walking Dead: World Beyond – Sunday, October 3, 7:06 p.m. & 10:20 p.m., AMC | Season Premiere

Sometimes, things are over just as quickly as they began. And while The Walking Dead universe as a whole definitely doesn’t fit under that umbrella, this particular series does. When season two kicks off this week, it’s with the knowledge that it’ll be the show’s last. The next 10 episodes are designed to wrap the story of Iris, Hope, Elton and Silas, the four young friends who have been facing off against the Civic Republic Military and fighting for their freedom in a world of flesh-eating Walkers.

While you may have mixed feelings about the show ending so soon, one thing fans of the franchise as a whole should get jazzed about are the Rick Grimes clues the series dropped in its trailer. While there’s been no confirmation that star Andrew Lincoln is returning, Jadis (Pollyanna McIntosh), the last character to see Grimes alive in that infamous helicopter scene, appeared in the preview’s final moments, stirring fans into a downright frenzy. “I know that the Civic Republic is the last light of the world. My purpose is to create a new era on this planet,” she said, decked out in CRM black.

So, did Rick follow her lead and join up with the CRM, or is he somewhere else altogether? Walking Dead super-producer Scott M. Gimple would only tease that this season offers up important hints as to what happened during that fateful helicopter ride. It’s anyone’s guess how satisfying those hints will actually be. But considering we’re all still waiting for those Rick Grimes movies AMC promised us ages ago, we’ll take what we can get for now.

2. Billions – Sunday, October 3, 8 p.m., Crave1 | Season Finale

Clutch those piggy banks tight and maybe brush up on your insider trading lingo, because the ultimate stock market thriller winds down its COVID-interrupted fifth season this weekend. Considering the show has already been renewed for season six, we’re expecting this finale to be in full-on, jaw-dropping cliffhanger mode. So consider pouring yourself a stiff one before tuning in.

3. Archer – Wednesday, October 6, 7 p.m., Adult Swim | Season Finale

The spy-jinks wrap for season 12, and they do so with the gang on an assignment described as “Mission: Difficult,” as Archer is trapped inside the HQ of rival spy agency IIA. Meanwhile, his old nemesis Barry is trapped inside “Other Barry” (something we can’t even begin to unpack in this 50-word space).

4. The Billion Dollar Code – Thursday, October 7, Netflix | Series Premiere

Based on true events, this miniseries tells the story of the two German computer pioneers who invented the Google Earth algorithm, and faced near-impossible odds when they took on a seemingly invincible opponent in a pitched legal battle over their creation. From the 1990s hacker scene in post-reunification Berlin to the idealistic world of Silicon Valley, The Billion Dollar Code explores friendship, loyalty and justice in the digital age.

5. Bull – Thursday, October 7, 10 p.m., Global & CBS | Season Premiere

Season six kicks off with Bull and the TAC team calling upon all their collective experience to locate Bull’s kidnapped daughter, as the abductor warns them not to go to the police. As Bull works to build the most important psych profile of his life, he begins to suspect the captor is someone connected to his past.

6. Pretty Smart – Friday, October 8, Netflix | Series Premiere

There are almost too many streaming services out there nowadays, all of which offer original single-camera comedies and dramas aplenty. But if there’s one specific type of programming where Netflix has managed to corner the market, it’s the classic, CBS-style multi-cam sitcom, a.k.a. the type that’s “filmed before a live studio audience.” This week, they’re back with a new one called Pretty Smart, and based on the trailer, it definitely has the potential to make some of your more cynical critics wonder in their reviews, “Why is the audience laughing so loud? It definitely wasn’t that funny!”

Still, as that trailer reminds us, it comes “from the writers of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and How I Met Your Mother,” so you can’t argue with the pedigree.

The show stars The Kominsky Method‘s Emily Osment as Chelsea, a Harvard grad and aspiring novelist who finds herself in such dire straits she’s forced to move in with her sister, Claire (Olivia Macklin), who… well, let’s just say that she very much didn’t go to Harvard, and it shows. In addition, she has three roommates: Grant (Gregg Sulkin), a handsome personal trainer; Jayden (Michael Hsu Rosen), a social media influencer; and Solana (Cinthya Carmona), a former lawyer who’s now working as a “healer.”

Obviously, we’ve seen the previews, but we’re trying not to let them form our final opinion of the show, because if we did, we’d say that Pretty Smart comes across as an attempt at cloning Friends, except it’s a female Ross moving in with a pair of Phoebes and a pair of Joeys. Still, it’s evident that each of these characters does have comedic potential—provided they’re toned down by a good 75 per cent or so.

7. Ted Lasso – Friday, October 8, Apple TV+ | Season Finale

Our man Ted concludes his latest season—of course, we’re talking about both the show itself and the season of soccer within said show. But rest assured, he’ll be back on the pitch for part three… because racking up the Emmys and Golden Globes puts TV execs in a real renewing sort of mood.

8. A Tale Dark & Grimm – Friday, October 8, Netflix

You know the story of Hansel and Gretel, of course, but… wait, what’s this? Netflix is putting a new spin on the old story? Why, we’re as shocked as you are!

Based on the book by Adam Gidwitz, this particular Hansel and Gretel are a prince and princess who leave home when their father threatens to chop off their heads. While on a quest for “perfect parents”—that’s their phrase, not ours—the siblings must make their way through a number of other classic Grimm fairy tales, wherein they face off with warlocks, witches and… the devil himself?Wow, that is pretty dark!

If you aren’t sold on the show yet, maybe the voice cast will do the trick: in addition to Raini Rodriguez and Andre Robinson as Hansel and Gretel, keep your ears open for such luminaries as Scott Adsit (30 Rock), Ron Funches (Undateable), Tom Hollander (Bohemian Rhapsody), Missi Pyle (Galaxy Quest), Nicole Byer (Nailed It!) and, voicing the devil, American Idol breakout Adam Lambert… so maybe expect apop-infused musical number or two from this prince of darkness?

9. Shark Tank – Friday, October 8, 8 p.m., CTV & ABC | Season Premiere

Daymond John, Barbara Corcoran, Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Kevin O’Leary and Robert Herjavec give more entrepreneurs the benefit of their wisdom and wealth. Guest-judging in season 13 are Emma Grede (founding partner of SKIMS) and comedy superstar Kevin Hart.

10. 20/20 – Friday, October 8, 9:01 p.m., ABC | Season Premiere

As far as we’re concerned, Friday nights are a time for popcorn, a cup o’ tea and incisive long-form journalism. So we’re pretty jazzed for season 44 of this venerable news magazine, which finds anchors David Muir, Amy Robach et al. shedding new light on high-profile stories and hot-button issues.
