Antique hunters: head to River Market’s Curious Flea, where one-of-a-kind items abound

River Market’s Curious Flea promises to be both adventurous and frugal this weekend, June 1-2, from 10 am to 5 pm. Located in New Westminster, this free-admission market will feature over 20 local vendors, fresh local fare, and lively music.

If you’re a lover of all things antique, you won’t be disappointed. Curious Flea’s Antique Alley table – similar to New Westminster’s Antique Alley – will be on display for shoppers to explore.

Quest for the Most Curious

Curious Flea will be holding a contest looking for the most unique object out there. So if you have something completely bizarre taking up space in your closet, bring it down to River Market Saturday and it could become part of their Curious Hall of Fame. The winner will receive $100 spending money for Curious Flea on Sunday.

Curious Flea’s Creative Vendors

Among the many creative vendors will be Your Ottoman Empire, a collection of mid-century modern furniture managed by co-owner Marc.

Most of Marc’s pieces come from Denmark, but all thoughtful and creative design is accepted no matter its origin.

“Our most popular items are credenzas, dining sets and lounge chairs. The beauty of Danish modern design is great lines in a compact package,” he says.

Marc is looking forward to showcasing some of their trendiest small decor pieces he believes can be the final touch in a vintage inspired room.

“We have been lucky enough to find some incredibly rare pieces, like the pair of Borge Mogensen low-slung oak lounge chairs and the Greta Jalk high-backed Lounger with original upholstery that will be with us on the weekend,” Marc says. “For us it is just as great to take pieces that have been sitting in an attic or basement for years and re-homing them somewhere they will be used and showcased.”

Robyn’s Vintage Nest Industrial Lighting (RVN), a mix of vintage pieces combined with an industrial edge to create lighting fixtures, will also be at Curious Flea. Heidi Clarkson, business partner of RVN founder Robyn Murrell, says that Murrell is the artistic force behind RVN Industrial Lighting.

“Most of Robyn’s pieces are one-of-kind, so it all depends what piece attracts individuals,” says Clarkson. “Robyn has always worked with her hands and is experienced in faux-painting, silversmithing, tailoring, and refurbishing vintage furniture,”

Whenever possible, Murrell prefers to leave fixtures in their original condition with the exception of new wiring and electrical components.

“So far her most popular works of art include an old heavy-duty metal oil changing bowl, a very aged farming cream separator that casts a subtle design on the ceiling, an antique crystal and silver tabletop cigar cutter transformed into an exquisite mini pendant and an upcycled vintage silver chafing dish.”
