Experience breakfast bliss at Snug Cafe

After a short ferry ride, it’s time for a quick stop to fuel up—and luckily the Snug Cafe, located in Snug Cove, is just a few minutes way from the terminal. This cozy neighbourhood hub is well-loved by locals and tourists alike for its delicious pastries, sandwiches and breakfast specials including the breakfast bowl, eggs Benny with salmon and breakfast wraps. Go back in time at Davie’s Orchard Museum

Even though it’s a small island, Bowen’s history dates back centuries. First used as an outpost by the Squamish Nation, the island was named in 1860 in honour of James Bowen, who helped the British win a grand sea victory against the French in 1794.

Known as the ‘Happy Isle’, Bowen turned into a popular holiday destination with an emerging logging and fishing industry. One of the earlier settlers was William Davies, who started his own business of selling fruits from his orchard. The remains of his land, now surrounded by a large park, have been preserved by the Bowen Island Heritage Preservation Association. Take a stroll through the orchards, and visit the 10 heritage cottages for a glimpse of island life back in the day.

Explore Artisan Square

Artisan Square, also known as Bowen’s cultural hub, is home to beautiful galleries, musical performances, fine foods and a collection of other local shops. If you’re looking to buy a gift for someone or even a token from the island for yourself, then this is the perfect place to shop.

Visit Bell’Ochio for a little bit of everything: art prints, candles, linens and home decor, or Artigiani Milanesi for some Italian cashmere knitwear. Make sure you have room for a pastry or two from Artisan Eats Café, and don’t leave without visiting Cocoa West for the best chocolate on the island.

Eat chocolate for breakfast

Cocoa West Chocolatier is no doubt one of the most popular destinations for both visitors and residents because let’s face it—who doesn’t love chocolate? Since 2002, Joanne Mogridge and her husband Carlos Vela-Martinez have been creating fine organic chocolates and ganache-filled truffles made with fresh, locally produced organic cream. They also make six different types of hot chocolate, including a creamy milk chocolate and a spiced Mexican blend as well as hand-cast organic chocolate bars.

But your visit to chocolate heaven doesn’t have to stop there. Located just around the corner is the Chocolate Suite, where you can stay the night for great rates and enjoy treats from Cocoa West (including chocolate for breakfast—does it get any better than that?).
