A fun, old school, kid-friendly creative activity that doesn’t require cleanup.

Kids have great fun discovering the craft of button making at the Regional Assembly of Text on Main Street

Quick: what handmade craft can your child create for friends and family that costs less than a dollar and makes no mess

Turns out that the fabulous Regional Assembly of Text on Main Street will let you use their button-making equipment (or supervise your child) for the rock-bottom price of 50 cents! I felt like we had time-travelled to the 1960s—what can you buy for less than a dollar these days?

My six-year-old made buttons for her entire class, carefully typing each classmate’s name using the shop’s cool vintage typewriters. She was fascinated by the efficient, “cutting-edge” technology.

“Look, Mommy! When you type the letter it shows up on the paper right away!”

Then each button was coloured in and out came the equipment. Before you knew it, we had swiftly executed 22 buttons, attached them to some darling red gift tags (also for sale at the store for 25 cents each), affixed some string and voilà! Heartfelt, handmade gifts in the blink of an eye!
