CARDED! show makes a game of art collecting

Looking to support local artists without paying hefty price tags or having to choose just one piece?

The second annual CARDED! art show, Saturday, February 27 from 8–11 p.m. at Jacana Contemporary Art Gallery will offer card-sized art prints for just one dollar each.

The event, from Chris Bentzen and Jim Hoehnle, creators of the popular Hot One Inch Action button-trading series, will feature one piece of work from each of the 50 participating artists, printed on 2.5″ x 3.5″ cards and hung on the gallery wall.

Attendees can buy the cards in randomly selected packs of five for $5. If you see something on the wall that wasn’t in your pack, you can trade your fellow card collectors for it. 

Expect a range of work, from illustration, to mixed media, to photography (for a hint, see the images from last year’s event). In addition to fast-paced trade negotiations, there will be music, too.

Jackie Dives is one of the artists whose work (image above) will be featured on the cards. A big supporter of the Vancouver art scene, she’s hoping the thrill of trading will get participants excited about the work being produced locally.

“It’s disguised as a game, but really it’s a cool way to get people celebrating art,” says Dives.
