Michael J. Fox returns, the Avengers come to television, and more of Fall's most anticipated new shows
The Michael J. Fox Show is one of the most anticipated new series coming up this fall
For most people, June marks the end of the school year and the beginning of summer. For TV critics, it’s time to start watching pilots of the shows that will begin airing in the fall.
I’ve already started viewing and, as usual, there’s a mix of the good, the bad and the ugly. One thing you’ll soon discover is that there are also a lot of them — almost 60 new pilots will be coming our way, nearly 30 of them scheduled to debut in the fall.
Even though I’m nowhere near finished watching them all yet, it’s already clear which will be potential winners and which won’t. With that in mind, here are four new shows you’ll want to put on your radar for the fall.
NBC won the bidding war for Michael J. Fox’s comeback series, placing a full-season, 22-episode order without even seeing a script. In this single-camera comedy, Fox plays a beloved New York City news anchor who has left his job due to his advancing Parkinson’s disease, but is lured back to the anchor desk by his former boss (The Wire’s Wendell Pierce).
This highly anticipated spin-off of the big-budget blockbuster The Avengers assembles a new team of top-secret government agents (including former ER doc Ming-Na Wen) to battle all manner of threats, under the leadership of S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg, reprising the role he played in The Avengers, Thor and the first two Iron Man movies). Avengers director Joss Whedon is exec producer, and directed the pilot.
Robin Williams takes on his first TV series since Mork & Mindy, playing a slightly unhinged advertising genius who works with his straight-laced daughter (Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Sarah Michelle Gellar), who reins him in just enough so he doesn’t go off the deep end.
Boston Legal’s James Spader stars in this crime thriller as criminal mastermind Raymond “Red” Reddington, whose brilliance has allowed him to elude capture for years until he suddenly and inexplicably turns himself in to the FBI, offering his expertise to catch the world’s most dangerous terrorists — but why?
