Welcome to Goodge Place: British-Inspired Boutique Opens in South Granville

Looking for artful objets and accessories from near and far? Then check out South Granville's newest boutique, Goodge Place, for a veritable cabinet of curiosities

10 things to covet at the new Goodge Place boutique

The black-and-white awning adorning the threshold of Goodge Place, Vancouver’s newest South Granville–area boutique, beckons visitors off West 8th Avenue (between Granville and Fir streets) and into an elegant series of rooms.

It’s clear that mother–daughter team (Patricia McLean, proprietor of World Mosaic, and Emily McLean) put some serious thinking into the British-inspired boutique. It’s a veritable cabinet of curiosities – fine finds for people who appreciate artful objets and accessories from near and far.

On the main floor, shelves are capped with Carrara marble and bedecked with gorgeous goods. Silk scarves beg to be touched. A wall-mounted taxidermy rabbit gazes over a grand birdcage filled with semi-precious baubles. Such whimsical touches abound, along with practical sensibilities. Grab a bouquet of fresh-cut flowers to grace your home. Linger over cup of Milano coffee at the bar or in “The Lab” – an office space designers and other creative types can reserve for private meetings.

Large windows let natural light suffuse the two-storey boutique and illuminate a high-wattage green wall that lures guests upstairs into a wonderland of custom tiles. Be inspired by the gorgeous installations of porcelain penny rounds, iridescent glass mosaics and beyond.

Playful porcelain bowls, plates and tiles decorated with Rory Dobner’s animal kingdom are certainly conversation starters. You may have spotted Dobner’s designs at Liberty in London and now you can bring these gold-trimmed treasures home.

Artful Books

Artful books, such as Pantone: 35 Inspirational Color Palettes for the Home, will delight design aficionados, colour lovers and artists alike. And if you have room, consider purchasing Annie Lebovitz’s massive book, filled with the photographer’s iconic work; it’s so hefty it comes with its own stand.

Laguiole Cutlery

Laguiole cutlery from France is très magnifique with its bone, wood or acrylic handles in shades such as champagne, bordeaux and vert anis. The stainless steel knives and diminutive forks will garner plenty of attention at your next soiree.

Glass Tumblers

Glass tumblers in deeply saturated hues, such as the handcrafted ones from Travis Sandoval Glass, add instant style to any tabletop. They’re sturdy enough to be used every day and the unusual hourglass shape gives them a Scandinavian sensibility.

Graphite Art Pencils

Graphite art pencils get a whimsical makeover from San Francisco artist, Agelio Batle, who elevates everyday objects, such as the humble pencil, into functional art.

Serving Trays

Serving trays, like the super-cool Grip banded tray from Finell, are essential items for anyone who likes to entertain. It’s a display-worthy piece that can be pressed into service on any occasion. Cocktails in the afternoon, anyone?

Orla Kiely Hand Cream

Orla Kiely hand cream is filled with essential oils such as bergamot and geranium (and free of parabens and other nasty stuff), designed to leave thirsty skin feeling quenched. The patterned packaging, a signature of the London-based fashion designer who is dubbed “The Queen of Prints,” will add a dash of design to your vanity too.

Artful Tile

Artful tile can set the scene for an entire space or simply provide a much-needed pop of colour. Statement-making custom tiles from Vancouver-based World Mosaic transcend typical play-it-safe neutrals with their arabesque flourishes and beautiful reclaimed French Oak.
