Eden: Ann Goldberg

Those familiar with Ann Goldberg’s enormous still-life close-ups will be delighted with her new exhibit “Eden”. The concept of the show emerged as she worked on a commissioned painting of the West Coast Rainforest Cathedral Grove, while reading John Steinbeck’s East of Eden.

The show includes several of the gorgeous floral and food paintings for which she is known, and also includes overpainting on photography, a new direction for the artist. One of her ongoing themes is to capture the beauty in the banal and she achieves that through the different visions of Eden presented in her show, whether they are about beauty and innocence, family and love, or hedonism and temptation.

BC Connection: Ann Goldberg lives and works in Vancouver. She is committed to bringing arts to youth and is a board member of Arts Umbrella, and will be the Artist in Residence at West Point Grey Academy for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Exhibit Details: The exhibit runs from June 13 to July 13, 2013 at Winsor Gallery, located at 258 East 1st Avenue, Vancouver, BC. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 am to 6:00 pm or by appointment.

Opening Details: Don’t miss the opening reception, from 6–8 pm on Thursday, June 13th. Ann Goldberg will be in attendance.

Let’s Reach c Together: Exhibit by Scott Massey

The “c” in the title of Scott Massey’s new exhibit refers to the speed of light, which is one of the scientific concepts that Massey fancifully explores in his exhibit of sculpture, photography and video works. Massey’s exhibit focuses on the beauty of the ground glass lens, and opens our eyes to the fields of photography and astronomy while exploring the concept of our collective journey through time and space.

BC Connection: Scott Massey is Vancouver-based artist who graduated from the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in 2003.

Exhibit Details: From June 5 to July 14, 2013, at the Charles H. Scott Gallery in the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, 1399 Johnston Street, Granville Island, Vancouver. The Big Foldy Painting of Death: Ian Forbes

Hands down, the The Big Foldy Painting of Death (BFPoD) has the best title of any exhibit or work of art. Ever. Inspired by the Foldy Books of Death (FBoD), the BFPoD is a huge canvas – 127-feet long and six-feet wide – that scans the circumference of grunt gallery. A narrative of apocalyptic doom and ecstatic rebirth, the work can be previewed online, but needs to be experienced directly for maximum impact.

BC Connection: Ian Forbes draws, paints, and teaches in Vancouver, BC Canada.

Exhibit Details: The exhibit runs from June 21 to July 21, 2013, at grunt gallery, 350 East 2nd Avenue, Vancouver, BC (look for the red sign). Gallery hours: Tuesday to Saturday, from 12-5 pm.

Opening Details: Don’t miss the opening reception on Friday, June 21st. Check the gallery website for times.

Sanctuary: Re-examing the Nest. A Group Exhibit by Lynne Green, Catherine Nicholls and Joan Skeet

This exhibit explores the symbolism and images of the nest through the paintings, sculpture and textile art of three established North Vancouver artists.

Traditionally, the nest symbolized the home, but in this contemporary context, the image of the nest is used to explore issues of the natural world, the nature of the home in modern society, life cycles of birth and death, and aspects of fulfillment and emptiness.

BC Connection: Lynne Green, Catherine Nicholls and Joan Skeet all live and work in North Vancouver.

Exhibit Details: From June 14 to July 20, 2013, at CityScape Community Art Space 335 Lonsdale Ave. North Vancouver. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Saturday, from 12-5 pm.

Opening Details: The opening reception takes place on Thursday June 13, from 7-9 pm. The Artist Talk takes place on Saturday June 15, from 1–3 pm, and all artists will be in attendance.

New Paintings by Greg Hardy

It should be noted that Greg Hardy talks about his paintings as descriptions of moments. Like any good description, or telling of a story to someone who wasn’t there, Hardy’s paintings have an expressive language comprised of brush strokes and colour.

He accentuates the experience of what it was to be there, and in doing so creates a new experience altogether: one that references what you see in a grand landscape under the sky, but offers a feeling of drama and excitement that emanates from the paint.

Hardy’s paintings have been collected extensively for the past 30 years by public and private entities across North America, including The Canada Council Art Bank (Ottawa), Cenovus Energy (Calgary), Mendel Art Gallery (Saskatoon), Edmonton Art Gallery, Confederation Centre of the Arts (Charlottetown) and the Saskatchewan Art Board. This is his second exhibition with Gallery Jones.

Exhibit Details: The exhibit runs from June 1-29, 2013 at Gallery Jones, 1725 West 3rd Avenue, Vancouver, BC. Gallery hours are Tuesday to Friday, from 11 am to 6 pm; Saturday 12-5 pm.
