Make Your Toddler’s First Trip to Disneyland Magical

Make your toddler's first visit to the happiest place on earth one to remember

Introduce your little one to a world of magic and wonder by taking your toddler to Disneyland

Many parents of young kids often wonder if the happiest place on earth is actually that magical with a toddler. Well, Mousketeers, you’ll be delighted to know that the answer is most definitely yes – with a few caveats, of course. After all, these delicate mini-humans must always be treated with kid gloves.

Plan Ahead

“The most fantastic, magical things can happen, and it all starts with a wish.” – Jiminy Cricket

A wish is good, but you also need a plan. Know before you go is probably the number one motto for travelling (anywhere) with a toddler, and it’s no different here.

By doing the legwork ahead of time you’ll feel more relaxed in the magical kingdom. An interactive map that allows you to search by age, interest and thrill level on the Disney website is your golden ticket for pint-sized toddler attractions.

If you’re visiting Disneyland Park and California Grand Adventure Park, tackle them on different days, as it’s far too much to fit both into one. Be sure to check out the daily schedule for entertainment and special events happening at each park.

The more popular rides use Disney FASTPASS, which saves your place in line while you explore the park. Head to your favourites first as certain attractions can book up within an hour of the park opening.

Your little Frozen fans will likely be heartbroken if they miss Anna & Elsa’s Royal Welcome at the Disney California Adventure Park (pictured). Reservations for any in-park table service restaurants are also highly recommended. Ariel’s Grotto at Paradise Pier is a winner for toddlers.

Adjust for Age

“You’re never too old to be young.” – Snow White

Watching your child experience Disneyland will make you feel like a kid again. With 10 toddler-sized rides, Fantasyland is definitely the best bang for your buck. Try and get here early as ride lines only get longer as the day goes on.

It’s a Small World, Casey Jr. Circus Train, King Arthur Carousel, Mad Hatter Tea Party (pictured), Storybook Land Canal Boats and Dumbo are all great for little ones.

While Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio’s Daring Journey, Peter Pan’s Flight and Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride don’t have any height restrictions, they may be a bit intense if your child scares easily.

Mickey’s Toon Town is your next best bet for toddlers as there are a few safe areas, including Goofy’s Playhouse, for them to run around and burn off all that candyfloss. Disney characters often make appearances here is as well.

In California Adventure Park, you’ll want to check out the Toy Story Midway Mania and the rides in A Bugs Land.

Stay On-site

“Today’s special moments are tomorrows memories.” – Genie

If you can swing it, staying at one of the Disney hotels will make your vacation even more magical. The proximity of the Disney properties to the parks is ideal when you’re with little ones.

Hotel guests also qualify for Magic Mornings, which allow you enter the park an hour before it opens. A full day on the rides can be overwhelming for all ages, so an early start with a mid-day break when the park is at its busiest will help recharge the batteries. Pop back to the hotel for a swim, lunch and a nap, and then return in the late afternoon when it’s cooler and a little bit quieter.

All three Disney properties offer a character breakfast, which you can book even if you’re not a hotel guest. Goofy’s Kitchen (Disneyland Hotel) and the Surf’s Up! Breakfast with Mickey and Friends (Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel) have most of the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse characters – from Minnie and Mickey to Donald and Daisy. Chip, Dale and Brother Bear are the main event at the Storytellers Café (Grand Californian), which tends to be a bit quieter – great for character interactions – and has a more sophisticated buffet that appeals to all ages.
