This week on DVD, check out the ultimate revenge movie with Quentin Tarantino's western Django Unchained
Jamie Foxx plays a freed slave who teams up with a ruthless bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) in order to rescue his wife (Kerry Washington) from an evil plantation owner (Leonardo DiCaprio) in this ultra-violent three-hour exploitation Western from writer-director Quentin Tarantino.
When her boyfriend proposes to her, strong-willed Sarah (Lizzy Caplan) breaks up with him and begins dating another man. Meanwhile, her sister Beth (Community’s Alison Brie) prepares for her own wedding to the ex-boyfriend’s buddy (Martin Starr of Freaks and Geeks).
With the most tenuous of connections to the first film, this sequel shares only a similar premise: a family moves into an old house (this time in an historic Georgia mansion) only to face horrific spirits from the past.
To accompany his new album, the former Snoop Dogg – now Snoop Lion, has his spiritual transformation chronicled in this documentary as he not only immerses himself in the Rastafarian lifestyle, but also visits a weed farm.
Andy Garcia stars as an ex-CIA operative who is now the host of a politically-charged talk show who is invited down to a South American country to help expose the corporate cover-up of a massacre on a small village.
When a sensitive teenage girl’s (Perla Haney-Jardine) mother abandons her, the girl becomes obsessed with the environment in this tender drama from filmmaker Jenny Deller.
Like a martial-arts version of A History of Violence, a mind-mannered man saves the village shopkeeper from being killed by two violent gangsters which opens up his mysterious past to investigation from a detective. (Anchor Bay)
In this entertaining low-budget tribute to 80’s action flicks, a soldier is saved from death by advanced scientific marvels to become a cyborg. He then teams up with a ragtag group of mercenaries to bring down some Nazi vampires.
CLASSIC RE-ISSUES
If you’ve been longing for an entertaining Japanese rip-off of Star Wars which features Streetfighter star Sonny Chiba and Vic Morrow, then look no further than this 1978 monstrosity now out on blu-ray. When their home planet is under attack, the King sends several seeds out into the universe with the belief that whoever gets one will help fight for him. At least that’s what I think it’s about. It doesn’t really matter as it cobbles together pieces of other more popular films to create its own fun film. (Shout Factory)
Between Evil Dead movies and after Blood Simple, college buddies Sam Raimi and Joel & Ethan Coen wrote this slapstick film noir farce about a pair of hit man exterminators (Brion James of Blade Runner and Paul L. Smith of Popeye) who are hired to kill the owner of a burglar alarm company and then try to frame it on a innocent dope. This comedy also features appearances by Bruce Campbell and Frances McDormand.
