The annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival returns to Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on August 9. Set up your blanket for the day at the main stage, or wander to enjoy some of the music at two smaller stages. This year’s performers include Canadian rockers Big Sugar and Wide Mouth Mason, Irish rockabilly performer Imelda May, American soul singer Bettye LaVette and American alt-country/blues songwriter Shakey Graves. In addition to the music, there will be various food vendors onsite as well as family activities such as guitar making, art activities and face painting.

Severe bronchitis forced Lady Gaga to cancel her scheduled Vancouver concert back in May, but the international pop star will make up for it at Rogers Arena on August 9. Since her 2008 debut, the five-time Grammy award winner has sold more than 24 million albums and 125 million singles. On tour to support her latest album, Artpop, Lady Gaga’s concert is sure to be an electrifying event filled with many surprising onstage antics and costume changes.
After nearly four decades in the business, 63-year-old Tom Petty and his band The Heartbreakers are still relentlessly making music and touring the world. Fresh off the release of their critically acclaimed 13th studio album, Hypnotic Eye, the heartland rock ‘n’ rollers return to Vancouver to play a show at Rogers Arena on August 14. Warm up those vocal chords to sing-along to all the old hits like “Free Fallin’” and “American Girl.” Steve Winwood, formerly of bands like the Spencer Davis Group, Traffic and Blind Faith, will open up the evening.
The PNE’s annual ‘Summer Night Concerts’ series features a number of nostalgia acts this year, including ‘80s rockers Joan Jett & the Blackhearts. As one of only two women named to Rolling Stone’s list of the 100 greatest guitar players of all time, Jett is a legendary inspiration that is still rocking hard in her 50s. With memorable hits like “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover,” fans will be singing their black hearts out all night.
It is nearly impossible to categorize the music of Beck. The American multi-instrumentalist has experimented with so many different genres in his career, from folk to hip-hop to psychedelia and beyond. First achieving success in the mid-’90s, the prolific songwriter has consistently released records that are drastically different from one another, always managing to keep his audience on their toes. His twelfth and latest release, Morning Phase, is a lo-fi folky affair intended as a companion piece to his acclaimed 2002 album, Sea Change. Beck’s concert at Burnaby’s Deer Lake Park on August 19 is sure to be just as unpredictable as his songwriting. Jenny Lewis, former frontwoman of the band Rilo Kiley, will provide support.
No one does outdoor summer concerts quite like Jack Johnson. The Hawaiian surfer-turned-songwriter writes folky acoustic songs perfectly suited to lying down on the grass and soaking up some sunshine. Concertgoers will have the chance to do just that at Johnson’s concert at Deer Lake Park on August 21 as part of his From Here to Now to You tour (also the name of his latest album). Joining Johnson on the bill is talented English songwriter Michael Kiwanuka.
It has been almost 15 years since English folk-rock songwriter David Gray found international success and acclaim with his fourth album, White Ladder. Six albums and many tours later, the 46-year-old is still going strong, currently promoting his latest release, Mutineers. The talented multi-instrumentalist makes a stop in Vancouver at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on August 26. With a voice that sounds like no one else’s, and a discography filled with hits like “Babylon” and “Sail Away,” Gray’s concert is one not to be missed.
Former White Stripes frontman Jack White never seems to stop moving. The eight-time Grammy award winner has also been a founding member of bands like The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, started his own record label (Third Man Records) and in more recent years, embarked on a solo career. His second solo album, Lazaretto, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts and broke Pearl Jam’s long-standing record for the most vinyl sales in one week. Jack White is both a chameleon and a character, and his concert at Deer Lake Park on August 28 is bound to be full of surprises.
