One of the mandates of the Master Gardeners Association of BC is that they work very hard to stay on top of their game, with each and every Master Gardener investing hours and hours into beefing up on the latest botanical info.

And this is a good thing in many ways, because not only do Master Gardeners frequently assist us with their excellent gardening advice at events, nurseries and botanical gardens, but they can also take credit for some outstanding educational opportunities.

On March 17th, for example, from 9 am to 3:30 pm at the Michael J. Fox Theatre (Burnaby South Secondary School), everyone is invited to join this group of avid gardening experts at their annual Spring Seminar, featuring bestselling garden authors Helen Dillon (Down to Earth with Helen Dillon) and Sharon Hanna (The Book of Kale), along with three other notable garden gurus.

With Master Gardener tickets at only $50 online ($60 at the door), this is a steal of a deal, and a wonderful chance to dig deep into the world of gardening a roomful of others also looking for the ultimate growth experience!

Marion Brodhagen

Marion Brodhagen is a former farm girl who has never lost her interest in agriculture.  She teaches microbiology, molecular biology and cellular biology at Western Washington University, and is responsible for some fascinating research on the chemical communication that occurs between plants and microbes (both good and bad).

Paul Buikema

Paul Buikema leads tree tours at the Riverview Hospital grounds and speaks to various garden clubs and groups at the UBC Botanical Garden. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, W.C.B. Certified Tree Risk Assessor, BC Arborist Technician Supervision, Certified Horticulture Technician, Allan Block Certified Wall Installer and a Waterscene Designs trained pond installer, with over 20 years of experience in the nursery and landscape industry in BC.

Sharon Hanna

Sharon Hanna received the Mayor’s Prize for Environmental Excellence in 2005 for the Queen Alexandra School garden program. Her first book, The Book of Kale (Harbour Publishing) is a national bestseller and includes 80+ recipes, plus tips on growing, nutrition, history, and kale for kids.

Sarah Bergmann

Sarah Bergmann is an artist and designer whose current work is the Pollinator Pathway, a large-scale research-and-response project based in Seattle. Bergmann is the 2012 recipient of the Betty Bowen Award and the 2012 Stranger Genius Award, and her work has been covered by many prestigious publications.

Helen Dillon

Helen Dillon is an author, broadcaster, newspaper columnist and garden consultant. She has lectured many times in USA, New Zealand, Germany, France, Australia and the UK and has travelled extensively in order to study plants in Nepal, China, South America, South Africa and New Zealand. In 1999 she was awarded the Gold Veitch Memorial Medal from the Royal Horticultural Society in England and in 2003 the George Robert White Medal of Honour from the Massachusetts Horticultural Society.

In autumn 2004 she was made a distinguished counsellor to the Board of the New York Botanical Garden. The garden at 45 Sandford Road, Ranelagh, Dublin 6, Ireland, has been open to the public for the last 30 years. Helen Dillon’s Garden Book was published November 2007 by Frances Lincoln and was Robin Lane Fox’s (of The Financial Times) book of the year. This is also published by Timber Press as Down to Earth with Helen Dillon. Other books include On Gardening, Garden Artistry, and The Flower Garden (for the Royal Horticultural Society).
