This week: experience the best brunch spots in town on one convenient tour, take a deep dive into the world of the Vancouver Aquarium, try out true West Coast tacos at Tacofino's newest location, and more
Tacofino is known around town for their delicious West Coast-inspired taco food truck, and now they’ve opened the doors to their flagship Taco Bar. Located in Gastown’s Blood Alley Square, the 3,000-square-foot-space includes a tequila bar, a 20-seat patio, and the Burrito Bar takeout counter. Tacofino loyalists and newbies will both have something to look forward to, as the Bar will have a mix of Tacofino’s fresh classics, and some new and exciting dishes. Stop reading and go eat there now.
Whether it’s an allergy or just a dietary decision, people all over the Lower Mainland have made the choice to go gluten free. The Vancouver Gluten Free Expo is the largest gluten-free event in the country, and they’ll be offering tasty samples and expert info on ditching gluten this weekend. You can buy tickets online or at the door and children under 10 are free with an accompanying adult.
Elevate your brunch game with a crawl from Dine Out Vancouver. You can choose between two Vancouver neighbourhoods (or hey, you could always hit up both of them) and sample a selection of breakfast foods from French toast to pulled pork. The Gastown crawl will start at Milano coffee before making its way to Brioche Eatery Café, Jamaican Blue Cold Brew, and more. The Kitsilano crawl begins at Novo Pizzeria and will stop at Krokodile Pear and Momento Coffee House, among others.
If you’ve been harbouring a fascination with the world under the ocean then Divers’ Weekend at the Vancouver Aquarium is the place to be. Learn about underwater archaeology, check out diving demonstrations, and treat the kids to an assortment of activities. If that’s not enough to convince diving fans, then maybe this will help: anyone who has their diving certification can receive a 50 per cent discount on their admission fee.
Does your Instagram account make everyone’s mouth water? If so then this is just the event for you. A Dine Out Vancouver Food-tography tour will take you to three Railtown eateries and encourage you to eat, sip, and snap pics of their food. A professional photographer will be on hand to give you tips on how to set up the perfect shot. The tour kicks off at Cadeaux Bakery, then moves on to Chill Winston, and finishes off at the Vancouver Urban Winery. Just make sure to keep your phone camera set to square.
Warm up this winter with the coziest festival in the city. The 5th Annual Vancouver Hot Chocolate Festival is taking over cafés and chocolate stores with 57 wild and delicious flavours. From Wasabi to potato to tequila, you can find wacky flavours at some of your favourite establishments across town. Some of the more conventional flavours include peppermint, vanilla, caramel, and orange. You can find a list of participating chocolate makers and the flavours they’re serving online.
Lots of people made plans to start afresh this New Year, and there is a multitude of Vancouver salons that want to help you to look your best. Fourteen salons have teamed up to present Beauty For Life on January 18. If you book any service – from a haircut to a manicure to a massage – at one of those 14 locations then 50 per cent of the money will be donated to the Vancouver Friends for Life Society, which provides health services to those in need. You can find a list of participating salons on their website.
Need a little motivation to get moving? #FPLETSMOVE is a fun way to get out and enjoy some free fitness classes with your friends. Free People is launching its new Movement Collection by holding events like this around the world. FP will be offering two free spin classes with music by DJ Yurie, and it’ll have Culver City Salads on-site for a healthy lunch.
The International Performing Arts Festival is offering Vancouver a chance to experience entertainment that’s outside the box. You can catch acrobatics, artist talks, music, dance, and theatre from artists around the world. They specialize in innovative performances that bend genres and inspire artists and audiences alike. Check the schedule and pick up tickets online, and make sure not to miss this innovative festival.
Despite the sinister name, the only scary thing about The Massacre is how hard it’ll have you laughing. The Massacre is Vancouver’s annual improv tournament taking place at The Improv Centre on Granville Island. Teams from Portland, Bellingham, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Santa Monica will be taking the stage to compete for the title of Theatre Sports Champions in a round robin tournament of comedy.
