Déjà Vu Vintage Market – March 5

Inspired by a frugal upbringing, Scottish-born Maris MacDonald has always had a knack for finding and repurposing old treasures. The Déjà Vu Vintage Market was established to give her and fellow local vendors a venue to share home and garden decor, antiques, collectables, jewellery and handmade gifts. The market circulates between various turn-of-the-century buildings, with this weekend’s event taking place at the Lonsdale Shipyards in North Vancouver.

Family FUSE Weekend – March 5 and 6

Get your family excited about art at the Vancouver Art Gallery’s next Family FUSE Weekend. A diverse range of performances and hands-on activities bring the groundbreaking MashUp exhibition to life. Meet artists, musicians, dancers, performers and educators at various sessions taking place throughout the gallery, including hip-hop workshops, collage technique classes and experimental electronic music and video performances.

Madama Butterfly – March 5 to 13

Join the Vancouver Opera for the emotional story of an American naval officer and Japanese geisha at the turn of the 20th century. Pleasure-seeking Pinkerton marries his young “butterfly” while living in Nagasaki, but soon abandons her when the relationship loses its initial enchantment. When he returns years later to reclaim their child, the devoted Butterfly is devastated and responds by making a supreme sacrifice.

Whitecaps Season Opener – March 6

Local sports fans have no doubt been disappointed by the Canucks this season, but luckily Major League Soccer starts up this week to distract us. The Whitecaps play their season opener this week against the Montreal Impact at BC Place Stadium. Join the league’s loudest and most loyal fanbase, the Southsiders, for their pre-game parade from Doolin’s pub through the streets of downtown.

Vancouver International Women in Film Festival – March 8 to 13

Celebrate International Women’s Day at the opening night of the Vancouver International Women in Film Festival (#VIWIFF2016). The 11th annual festival features an impressive lineup of short, mid-length and feature films by established and emerging female filmmakers from around the world. Organized by non-profit society Women in Film and Television Vancouver, the six-day event accepts films with women in at least three key creative roles. All films will be screened at the Vancity Theatre.

Dinner Party YVR – April 9

The city’s biggest, boldest and most philanthropic dinner party returns this Saturday. With 100 per cent of proceeds going to charity, this year’s third annual #DinnerPartyYVR is anticipated to raise over $20,000 for Potluck Café Society and Atira Women’s Resources. Hobby chef Jason Pleym is the co-founder of Two Rivers Specialty Meats and will be hosting the upcoming event at Maddox Downtown’s stunning rooftop lounge.

Out For Lunch – March 11

The Vancouver Art Gallery’s next Out For Lunch midday concert features violinist Van Le performing Strauss’s Violin Sonata and Ravel’s Tzigane with pianist Richard Epp. A current Masters student at the University of British Columbia, Le is a celebrated performer and active teacher. The lunch hour concert series is included in gallery admission or membership.

Justin Beiber – March 11

Canadian superstar and recent Grammy-award winner, Justin Beiber will be singing to a love-crazed crowd at Rogers Arena this week. Three tracks from Beiber’s latest album, Purpose, are currently listed on the American Top 40, with Love Yourself claiming the No. 1 spot for the last two weeks of February. Born and raised in London, Ontario, Bieber first took the world by storm in 2009 at the age of 15 with his debut EP My World.

We Are the City – March 11

Originally formed in Kelowna, progressive rock band We Are The City captured significant attention as winners of the 2009 Peak Performance Project. The group has since acquired international acclaim, thanks largely to their film, Violent, which premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival and was also showcased at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival. The band will play for their adoptive hometown at the Imperial as part of their Canadian tour.

darkMountains at Vancouver Special – beginning March 11

Vancouver-based mixed media artist Dina González Mascaró will be exhibiting drawings from her latest series, DARK, at eclectic Mount Pleasant household decor shop, Vancouver Special. DGM’s work fluctuates between art, jewellery, sculpture and furniture. darkMountains, a collection of charcoal and graphite drawings, was inspired by mountains, caves, structures and loss.
