The grand dame of Pecha Kucha Night Vancouver shares her picks on local art, food, drinks and music.
My favourite local spot for a drink is Six Acres, with its proximity to [my] office, the beer selection and the vibe. [I also like] grabbing a coffee at JJ Bean in the Woodward’s building—I love the Stan Douglas art and the urban environment.
For food-on-the-go, there’s Nuba in Mount Pleasant, off the beaten path and healthy.
The best Italian and entertainment is the Italian Kitchen on Alberni Street. The chefs are energetic and entertaining, and the food is amazing.
My favourite local potluck is Alfresco Vancouver, where you can meet new people in a beautiful urban outdoor setting.
I also love the recently updated Vogue Theatre [pictured above]; it’s one of the few privately owned venues in the city.
I have two favourite cultural events. One is obvious: Pecha Kucha. Even though we produce these, on the night of I get as much out of it as anyone in the audience. It makes me proud to be a Vancouverite. The other one is Brief Encounters by The Tomorrow Collective, where you get several creative performance expressions in one night.
As for music, my taste is all over the place, but increasingly I’m becoming a huge fan of our emerging Canadian music scene, including The Salteens, Woodpigeon, Hannah Georgas, Connelly Farr, Zaac Pick and Christopher Smith.
[For local music venues,] I’d have to say the Vogue, as that’s where I’ve been lately, although I did see Hannah Georgas in my sister’s living room for the Imagine One Day benefit.
