Would you travel halfway around the world to compete in a marathon?
Dedicated runners are travelling across the world to compete in destination marathons
For many people, the coming of spring also means the launch of running or race season. And more and more travellers, it seems, are taking to the notion of destination races — or vacations with a little athletic competition mixed in.
And there’s no shortage of places to go all year round, all over the world. There are literally hundreds of marathons across North America that you can consider.
If you want to get even more adventurous, you might look at one of these top international events:
There are a number of specialty travel websites out there to help you choose which destination is right for you, taking into account what kind of vacation you want to have before or, more likely than not, after your big event is over. Or, you might even choose to make the actual race serve as your tour of a specific destination.
Planning ahead is key and it’s important to think about a number of elements well in advance — everything from how your gear will be transported, to where you’re going to stay.
If you’re going to be participating in a bike race or triathlon, you’re going to need to transport your bicycle. You can check it as oversized luggage on the plane or use companies such as bikeflight.com to provide hassle-free shipping, with round-trip rates based on your bike’s destination.
Another quick tip for race-goers is to be sure to pack everything you may need and carry all essential items with you on the plane. Always pack your racing shoes and/or helmet in your carry-on bag. If your luggage should get lost, especially when travelling internationally, replacing sneakers or any other critical gear for your race can be very difficult.
When it comes to booking accommodation, you’ll want to do it early, especially if you’re heading to a popular travel spot. And don’t always rely on the suggestions provided on the race event website. A little bit of research could save you some money and potentially put you in an even better hotel.
