Attention Vancouver Canucks fans! Help vote our loveable superfans, the Green Men, into the fan Hall of Fame
The Green Men have become international darlings thanks to their penalty box antics
With a potential NHL lockout looming, there may not be any Vancouver Canucks games in the foreseeable future.
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be any sightings of the team’s most ardent support duo: the Green Men.
Sully and Force, the local uber-Nucks who have achieved international attention for their hilarity and hijinks inside of Rogers Arena on game nights, have been nominated for induction into the newly-created Hall of Fans, a Hall of Fame for fans who go above-and-beyond the call of duty.
Run by sports giant ESPN, this inaugural process is comprised of just 10 nominees, of which the ‘greeners’ are the only Canadians. The duo is hoping their own legion of fans will propel them into one of the three highly coveted spots.
Unlike other potential candidates vying for the honour, the Green Men truly take their antics to another level.
“I think we’re different from the rest because we’ve had an impact on the game and the fans; not just fans of hockey either, but fans of every sport. Almost every game in every sport, you see a guy wearing a full spandex suit. We’ve started a ridiculous trend that somehow keeps growing,” says Sully.
The entire spandex movement began as a one-off prank between the two in 2009 and has since blossomed into a full-blown phenomenon that now spans all sports and athletic disciplines across the world.
“I think if anyone said they saw this coming they’d be lying through their teeth,” he adds. “This is the most random thing that’s ever happened to Force or I, no question. It was supposed to be a one-night goof that’s turned into a full time job at times. It’s amazing how people have reacted, and my lone goal is to keep making people laugh and to keep them having a good time.”
And if the game experiences a work stoppage, what then of the Green Men?
“Force and I will continue to train hard by lawn bowling and playing countless hours of beer pong,” says Sully. “In all honesty, I’ve got a few things up my sleeve. You’ll see what I mean soon enough.”
The three fans to earn the most votes will be ceremoniously inducted next month at ESPN Headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.
Show your love for and vote for the Green Men. Voting is open until August 31.
