Need a little more Jerry Seinfeld in your life? Catch the comedian chatting about nothing with his funny friends over a cup of joe
Famous friends like Ricky Gervais pop up in Jerry Seinfeld’s new web series Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
Since leaving his sitcom behind, Jerry Seinfeld hasn’t really gone out of his way to do any real heavy lifting, creatively speaking.
Sure, writing jokes for his ongoing stand-up career is probably a little challenging, but beyond that, what’s he done? He didn’t even have to put on pants to do Bee Movie, and beyond that, he’s mostly just played himself on shows like 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm . . . and, really, how hard is that?
If you think that’s bad, wait until you get a look at Seinfeld’s new web series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. Not only does it once again find him playing himself, but it’s even easier this time, as it’s effectively a reality show, one which is literally exactly what its title says it is: The guy’s just driving around with his comedy buddies, chatting over coffee, and then going home. How lazy can you get?
Oh, we’re only teasing. In truth, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is pretty darned fantastic, even if isn’t exactly taxing Seinfeld a great deal.
Still, when you can dip into your rolodex, make a few calls and get the likes of Carl Reiner and Mel Brooks, Ricky Gervais, Alec Baldwin and — perhaps inevitably — Larry David to offer up side-splitting conversation simply by opening their mouths, why waste your time and brain cells trying to come up with something more creative?
The odds are pretty good that it’s still not going to be as funny as the interplay between Reiner and Brooks that they’ve been honing for the last five decades. Admittedly, some of the interviews are more in-depth than others, and those looking strictly for matinee names may be left wondering, “Who’s Bob Einstein? And why should I care about this Joel Hodgson guy?” Caffeine and comedy geeks, however, will be in heaven.
