The final season of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' begins as acclaimed comedy heads to the home stretch
The journey of unlikely comedian Midge Maisel that began in 2017 is heading into the home stretch, with the fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel debuting this week. Few TV shows have won the level of acclaim enjoyed by this beloved comedy, which has received a staggering 54 Emmy nominations, winning 20, while star Rachel Brosnahan has won one Emmy, two Golden Globes, three Screen Actors Guild Awards and two Critics’ Choice Awards for her performance as the titular ’50s housewife turned comic—a feat that has never before been achieved by any actor for a single series.
As viewers will recall, a stern lecture from Lenny Bruce (Luke Kirby) led Midge to an epiphany in the final moments of season four, with the official synopsis teasing that Midge finds herself closer than ever to the success she’s dreamed of, only to discover that ‘closer than ever’ is still so far away.
Meanwhile, creator Amy Sherman-Palladino is promising an epic conclusion. The minute that we found out that was the path forward, we really took a lot of time and a lot of care to make sure that we stick the landing because the most important thing to me is to make sure that Midge gets the sendoff and the full treatment that she deserves, the writer told Glamour. We will give you a lot of bang for your buck. We’re taking a really long time etching out these episodes. We’re trying to do some fun stuff that maybe people won’t really expect from us because we don’t do this kind of stuff a lot. We’re trying to savour every minute because this show is not going to happen again. It’s that thing that happens where you work with a cast that you would work with the rest of your life and a crew that you would take a bullet for. We’re trying to make sure that we appreciate every moment.
The fifth and final season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel premieres Friday, April 15
