Stylegarage has come to Gastown, and it's brought a laid-back attitude to home design with it
Stylegarage also offers great decor ideas, including an art piece using just yarn and screws. “It’s conversational, cheap and easy, and almost anyone can replicate it,” says manager Sean Colohan.
There’s a dapper new design destination in downtown Vancouver: Stylegarage. The somewhat-of-an-oxymoron name fits. Think Mad Men (that alluring, put-together, old-school quality) with a relaxed, down-to-earth vibe (Stylegarage is referred to in-house as the surfer shop of furniture stores).
Add to that some Canadiana (furniture names like Trudeau and Atwood), lots of “green” (Stylegarage’s counterpart, the Gus* Modern line, has earned the FSC badge on all its pieces), and definite everyman appeal – it all started in industrial designer David Podsiadlo’s garage.
From there, Stylegarage made its name on Toronto’s Queen St. West. Now it’s set up shop in the up-and-coming design district of Gastown, across from the Woodward’s Loft building. Inside the revitalized space it’s all about “modern made simple.”
It’s a bit of a mantra here – from the Jane sectional sofa (a perennial fave and bestseller) to the wall art, including a ceiling-high installation of cedar end-cuts (not for sale, but inspiration).
Get ironic: The Timber Table, in acrylic with a wood-grain pattern, is an ironic and ultra-modern reinterpretation of the company’s fir stools.
Go boho: The Upcycle Ottoman by Gus* (right) is granola-gone-glam, with utilitarian materials – organic coffee sacks – reused in one-of-a-kind cubes.
Our pick: The Delano might just be the Gus* chair. Its angled form and blind-tufted leather seat ensconced in sleek squares of steel meshes Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona and Marcel Breuer’s Wassily chairs.
Stylegarage can be found at 124 West Hastings Street, Vancouver.
