Summer treats like ice cream and frappuccinos are tough to resist, but healthier options can save you a lot of calories, sugar and fat
Make healthy fresh fruit popsicles from leftover smoothies
Unfortunately, many of these frozen treats are loaded with calories, fat and sugar.
A double-scoop ice-cream cone contains 280 calories, 14 g of fat (8 g saturated) and 8 tsp. (40 mL) of sugar.
A frozen coffee drink can run to 600 calories, 15 g of fat (8 g saturated) and 20 tsp. (100 mL) of sugar.
Healthier Frozen Treats
Replacing an ice-cream cone with a frozen fruit bar saves more than 200 calories and 5 tsp. (25 mL) of sugar, while replacing the frozen coffee drink with a skinny iced latte spares 500 calories and 18 tsp. (90 mL) of sugar.
Make your own coffee drink by combining strong coffee with ice cubes and chocolate milk.
Fruit smoothies made with fresh peaches, berries and yogurt are also refreshing (freeze leftovers in popsicle moulds for a family-friendly treat). Slightly thawed frozen banana chunks or seedless grapes also make great low-calorie treats.
