Arrested Development’s fourth season to come out all at once

Pretty much everything about the revival of Arrested Development as a TV series has been unconventional, and Netflix’s plan for rolling out new episodes is following suit.

At an appearance Tuesday (April 17) with show creator Mitch Hurwitz and several cast members at the National Association of Broadcasters convention in Las Vegas, Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said all 10 episodes of Arrested‘s fourth season will debut on the same day next year (just which day is yet to be determined). Production is scheduled to begin in the summer.

Hurwitz also told the crowd that the decision to release the show that way changed his approach to it. He had been thinking of focusing each episode on a single character, but it’s now “becoming more like the old show again,” he says.

“There’s going to be some mystery sprinkled throughout this [but] instead of watching one a week and try to get ahead of it, the hope is [fans] will watch them all together and then go back and look for clues and connections,” Hurwitz said, according to Vulture. “We’d also like to use the technology to provide additional material, where you might be able to access another part of the story.”

He’s also not worried about people devouring the entire season as soon as it’s released and then talking about it online: “It’s comedy,” he says. “The twists aren’t as important as the characters.”

Hurwitz and cast members Will Arnett, Alia Shawkat, Jessica Walter, David Cross and Jeffrey Tambor didn’t mention the Arrested Development movie that’s supposed to come after filming of the new season, but Hurwitz did say he’d consider producing more episodes for Netflix.

Here’s video of Hurwitz talking about how he conceived the fourth season and how that’s now changed.
