Dress a little differently, and see what kind of adventure comes your way

Being adventurous is a state of mind. And anyone can achieve it.

In Sex and the City 2, Carrie Bradshaw bemoans the humdrum routine that has taken hold of her once-exciting life. And while most would argue that the fictional sex columnist’s life is anything but boring, it’s a sentiment to which many people can relate, whether they’re living large in the big city or going it quietly in a smaller town.

Daily life is the same deal for most people: we get up, go to work, come home, decide what’s for dinner, and fall down exhausted from the stresses of the day. Weekends become the chance to catch our breath ever so briefly before starting the rat race all over again.

But unlike Carrie Bradshaw, for most of us it’s not realistic to shake things up with an all-expenses-paid trip to the Middle East. Sure, travelling is a great way to add adventure to your life, but it’s expensive and time-consuming and doesn’t actually change your daily life – it just gives you a break from your routine.

How to be Adventurous Every Day

The key to shaking things up regularly is finding easy ways to add adventure to your every day. And it’s not as difficult as it sounds. Here are 6 easy tips you can try anytime to put a little more sparkle in your day. They’ll not only change your routine, they might also offer you a new perspective on life.

  1. Turn off the TV. First of all, stop living vicariously through fictional characters. Instead, get out and explore your neighborhood, town or province. Pick a destination and go for a walk or take a drive. Take some pictures, chat with the locals or just walk around and soak up the sights. Not only will you create your own adventure, but you’ll also get a little exercise along the way.
  2. Eat exotic. Go wild, literally! Try some game meat or exotic seafood, or vegetables you’ve never had before, like kale. Visit your local ethnic grocer and buy something with packaging you can’t even read. You might just discover your new favourite food.
  3. Get lost. You don’t need to crash on a mystical desert island to have a big adventure. Put away your map and just go where your fancy takes you. You’ll find your way back eventually, and in the meantime, let go of the need to know where you are and just focus on what’s going on around you.
  4. Wear something outrageous. Okay, I know fashion won’t change your life, but it could make your day a little brighter. Remix your wardrobe and try a colour combination you would never think of, or paint your toes in a checkered pattern. Anything, really, that you wouldn’t normally do. Notice how it makes you feel and whether it changes others’ reactions to you.
  5. Make yourself famous. Are you one of those people who watches talent shows and gets the urge to perform? So why not take a dance class, or enter a singing competition, or just make some home videos and post them to YouTube? Who knows, you could become the next Internet sensation!
  6. Get crafty. Crafting communities are on the rise, and craft fairs allow an outlet for creative output. Find something you’d like to create – knit legwarmers, silk-screened yoga tops, bejeweled iPad skins, and showcase your wares online or at your community craft fair.

When you see every day as a potential adventure, life gets a whole lot less boring, and even an all-expenses-paid trip to the Middle East will seem less adventurous than your daily escapades.
