The lasagna garden really lives up to its reputation as being a ‘no brainer’! Three weeks after being created this garden is chock-a-block with lettuces, spinach and chicory and the peas, carrots and broccoli are coming along very quickly. No weeding, no feeding and very little watering in this cool spring.
Due to high fertility plants can be grown close together in the row, with rows tight together. This way leaves overlap to keep the soil below weed free, shaded and moist. I harvest greens as needed by picking off leaves rather than pulling the plant out of the ground. This way plants provide a long season of harvest before going to seed.
Early crops of spinach, peas and lettuce can be replaced by plantings of radish, tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, bush beans, beets or more spinach for fall. Rocambole garlic will be out of the ground in July, which provides space for winter leaf and root crops to follow.
