Q: Why would radishes grow bushy green tops and no radishes?
Radishes can temperamental, so there are a couple different things that could be causing this problem. Hot weather can cause radishes to grow only greens, or radishes can turn out underdeveloped if they don’t receive enough sunlight. Or, if radishes are planted too closely together, they won’t have enough room to plump up.
Another important factor is soil balance. It’s important to keep an eye on your soil when growing radishes. They can be quite sensitive and hard to grow. When planting radishes, choose a spot that will receive a lot of sunlight. If you live in a hotter climate, they can handle a little shade, but still require several hours of direct sun a day. Before you plant them, work the soil to a depth of about 25cm (10 inches) and till in some organic material or compost. This will help the soil stay balanced and soft. You can try loosening harder soil with a fork, working around and underneath your radishes. It’s important that soil stays soft and drains easily. Water your radishes at least once a week and hopefully you will have some luck.
