Show off gorgeous bulbous perennials in sleek containers
For sophisticated white-on-white blooms, pot up sleek containers of white Crocus vernus ‘Jeanne d’Arc’ and Muscari botryoides ‘Album’ (grape hyacinth), adding checkered Fritillaria meleagris and palest-pink Chionodoxa forbesii ‘Pink Giant’ for punctuation. A wide assortment of pre-potted spring-bulb plants can be found at garden centres now. Add succulents for extra pizzazz. All these gorgeous bulbous perennials are hardy to zone 3 when in the ground, although when planted in a container, zones 4 and warmer are recommended. Once the bulbs have finished blooming, recycle the succulents to your summer containers. When the weather allows, transplant the bulbs into the garden, and allow the foliage to die back naturally, to allow the bulbs to recharge sufficiently for future years’ blooms.
