This zone 5 beauty is almost too good to be true.
Talk about winter interest!
During my visit to Chilliwack’s Cannor Nursery, I couldn’t help but stop to admire and photograph this Acer palmatum ‘Sango kaku’ (coral bark Japanese maple).
Gorgeous with any backdrop, this one is an absolute stunner against snow and just as pretty later when cloaked with spring’s grass-green leaves or fall’s yellow-gold show gleaming against the vivid peach-toned bark.
Hardy to zone 5, it reaches a height of 6 m (20 ft.). On the coast it likes full sun or bright shade; in hotter spots partial shade is better. In either setting, it’s almost too good to be true – and I’m thinking I will be bringing a bigger car next time…
