Sharon Hanna grows her own fresh lunch - steamed asparagus and lacinato kale
Here is part of yesterday’s lunch from the garden – though four stalks of asparagus is hardly a bumper crop. The lacinato kale turned brilliant green when steamed and the combination was yummy.
Asparagus seems to take quite a long time to become established, and perhaps you need to grow a whole lot of it in order to enjoy enough for more than one person at a time. A new variety planted from seed last year is called ‘Jersey Knight’ – seeds are expensive, and it purports to be all male and stocky, with a slightly purple tinge to the tender tips. I can hardly wait. Hopefully I’ll get enough to make a good feast in my lifetime.
