Utilize your living space to create a functional and stylish home
When it comes to designing a home, it can be tricky figuring out how to strike the perfect balance between stylish and functional. What’s the right amount of storage space in your kitchen? How do you add style and character to a room and still make it practical for the whole family?
It’s with these questions in mind that interior designer Maria DeCotiis designed this gorgeous and refined dream home in Burnaby, B.C. The clients were living in a home that felt dark and lacked storage, says DeCotiis, So the goal was to create a bright space with plenty of storage space, without sacrificing style or charm.
Here are four ways to maximize storage space in your home and still retain plenty of charm and character…
When in doubt, you can never go wrong with built-in storage. Having built-ins means utilizing the space to its full potential, especially when you take them up to the ceiling, says DeCotiis. You don’t need to opt for only white either! Any colour works, as long as it’s consistent and cohesive with the rest of the room.
Take inventory of how a space will be used and what you will be storing. That way, you’ll know there is a truly a place for everything. By taking stock of what exactly needs a home, whether it’s living room accessories, kitchenware or books, you’ll avoid having too little—or too much—storage space. After all, every shelf, cupboard, box or drawer should have a purpose!
It’s always great to have some open shelves, but make sure there is also plenty of closed storage to hide any clutter. This type of combined storage works in almost any room, but it’s particularly useful in a kitchen.
Use open shelving to store your favourite decorative bowls, cookie jars and other kitchen accessories. This is your chance to show off your personal style and highlight your favourite items! Bulk items—like dining sets and the majority of your glassware—can be neatly tucked away in closed storage.
Add additional character by incorporating special decorative elements to your storage. For example, add wall sconces to add light and a bit of design flair, or place tabletop accessories on dressers or side tables. Adding accent detailing and colours to cupboard handles or additional open shelving is another way to spice up your storage and include some variety.
