From Netflix shows to reality TV, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

From Netflix shows to reality TV, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. Celebrity Family Feud – Sunday, June 11th, 8 p.m., City & ABC | Season Premiere

Ah, summer—a time for long, lazy days, outdoor adventure and lightweight TV shows offering up mindless entertainment for those rare nights that we’re actually indoors. And so it is that this star-studded spinoff version of the classic daytime game show returns to us. After all, who doesn’t want to see how celebrities and their family members stack up in terms of guessing what the average person thinks about everything from favourite fruits to ?the most annoying bodily functions? (We’re just going to assume none of you are raising your hand.)

This third season is sure to be ?just as full of chuckles as the first two, especially with Steve Harvey returning to head up the shenanigans and buzzer banging (and if recent weeks are any indication, plenty of behind-the-scenes controversy).

Speaking of Harvey, this season actually also features a small twist: his own family will participate in the tomfoolery for one episode, hoping to win up to $25,000 for a charity of their choice. They’ll join other stars like Amy Schumer and her family taking on the likes of Kelly Clarkson and hers, and the twinkle-toed two- steppers of Dancing With the Stars taking on the cutthroat business tycoons from Shark Tank. And, because we all love a little romance with our celebrity game shows, there’s also a Bachelor-themed episode to look forward to when ?past male stars of the franchise take on the females. Now how can it get better than that? Survey says: it can’t.

2. American Gods – Monday, June 12th, Amazon Prime

This singularly stirring fantasy delves into the “long, winding and often-tragic” backstory of one of its Old Gods, Mad Sweeney; given that he will apparently require a “prayer,” this might well be the foul-mouthed leprechaun’s series exit. Elsewhere, Laura finds a co-pilot for her journey back to life.

3. Breakfast at Tiffany’s – Monday, June 12th, 5 p.m., TCM

Audrey Hepburn found ?her defining role in Holly Golightly, the carefree party girl who earns the infatuation of a struggling writer (George Peppard), who comes to realize there’s something tragic lurking beneath her effervescent façade.

4. So You Think You Can Dance – Monday, June 12th, 8 p.m., Fox | Season Premiere

After dabbling in MasterChef Junior territory last year, the dance battle goes back to adults for season 14. What’s more, we’ve got another shakeup behind the judges table, as High School Musical’s Vanessa Hudgens and original judge Mary Murphy take over for Paula Abdul and Jason Derulo; as ever, Nigel Lythgoe remains.

5. Idiotsitter – Tuesday, June 13th, 7:30 p.m. & 11:30 p.m., Much | Season Premiere

When we last left Gene (Jillian Bell) and Billie (Charlotte Newhouse), they were on the run from the cops, which—given what viewers had seen of the pair in the episodes leading up to the finale—seemed more or less inevitable. As such, it should come as so little surprise that season two opens with the duo standing in a courtroom that it hardly seems fair to call it a spoiler.

What might be slightly more spoiler-esque is how their case plays out, but since it’s given away in both the press release and the trailer (not to mention in an interview that Bell and Newhouse did with Deadline Hollywood back in June 2016), anyone who’s been paying attention should already know that this season revolves around Gene and Billie at college.

Of course, Gene is a professor and Billie is a student, but who cares? They’re together again! If this news surprises you, then you may be wondering how on earth Billie got into college in the first place, given her academic record, but rest assured that this is explained shortly after the opening credits of the season premiere. You’ll also be introduced to the folks on and around campus.

“I really think the new characters and the new setting is agreeing with the show well,” Bell told LRM Online earlier this year. “I’m hoping that the people who watched it last season will be into it, and people who haven’t discovered it yet will check it out, because I’m really proud of the work that Charlotte and I did. It’s pretty exciting.”

6. Fargo – Wednesday, June 14th, 7 p.m., 8:10 p.m. & 10 p.m., FX Canada

If Emmit has proven anything it’s that he knows how to reach out and touch people. And so he sits down with lonely cop Gloria (a.k.a the woman who’s trying to unravel his criminal conspiracy) this week, but who will have the advantage? Meanwhile, Nikki puts her skills to use, brokering herself a nifty deal.

7. Casino – Wednesday, June 14th, 8 p.m., ENC2

Expectations loomed large for Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas follow-up, especially given the presence of Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci; while few would claim this tale of the mob’s rise and fall in Sin City cleared the lofty bar set by its predecessor, Casino is unmistakably the work of a master filmmaker at the top of his game.

8. Gonzo: The Life and Times of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson – Thursday, June 15th, 9 p.m. & Midnight, Knowledge

Hunter S. Thompson lived the sort of life that makes it very hard to make up stories about him, because no matter how crazy the story might be, his reputation is such that it’s difficult to ever dismiss the possibility that, well, he wasn’t kidding! He was a man who enjoyed such vices as swigging whiskey, snorting coke and satisfying his libido, but he was also a legend among journalists, thrilling both his readers and fellow writers for his “gonzo” manner of covering stories.

Directed by Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, The Armstrong Lie), Gonzo? opts to focus its time on the years between 1965 and 1975, a.k.a. the years during which Thompson began the ascent to the top of his game, thereby leaving out any possibility that his career might’ve gone downhill as time passed. That’s OK, though, because Thompson’s glory years were indeed glorious, involving such key books as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Hell’s Angels, Gonzo Papers and more. With narration from Johnny Depp (who famously portrayed Thompson in the 1998 adaptation of Fear and Loathing), the film incorporates interviews with Thompson’s peers as well as those who are simply diehard fans of his work, resulting in a story which isn’t entirely unbiased but is fascinating nonetheless.

9. Reign – Thursday, June 15th, 9 p.m., CTV2 and Friday, June 16th, 9 p.m., The CW | Series Finale

Period pieces are always tricky ?to execute, and we imagine they’re even trickier when you’re trying to maintain authenticity, but also subtly modernize the costumes and characterizations for a younger audience. Throughout its four-season run, this CW offering has done a pretty admirable job of sexy-ing up its history to get the Facebook generation hooked on the bittersweet life, love and legacy of Queen Mary Stuart (a.k.a. the Queen of Scots).

Heading into this current and ?final season there was lots of history left to cover—what with meeting Mary’s second and third husbands, the various unresolved schemes swirling about the royal court and a game-changing exile. Reign has never been one to shy away from fast-paced storytelling, but this year in particular, it seemed as though there was a lot of real history to cover while servicing all that soapy personal drama. Luckily, the cast and crew knew season four would be their last before they started plotting it out, so as we approach this week’s series finale we’re very much expecting a satisfying denoument. Or, as satisfying as it can be, given that the real Mary was executed following decades of imprisonment by Queen Elizabeth I. (Royals these days are so much classier, aren’t they, channelling their blood lust into withering glares and veiled insults.)

Of course, the series has taken a few liberties with historical fact along the way, but when it comes to death, it’s pretty much stuck to its axes. So maybe it’s not a matter of whether ?it will be “off with her head” in the series’ final moments, but whether the act itself will be heartbreaking—or, like Mary at her best, defiant in the face of doom.

10. The Ranch – Friday, June 16th, Netflix

It’s back to The Ranch with Ashton Kutcher, Danny Masterson, Debra Winger and the inimitable Sam Elliott for another season! ?Colt continues to find himself in a love triangle with Abby and Heather, while Maggie and Beau deal with being divorced friends.
