From Supreme Court heroes to Hollywood heartthrobs, we round up our top 10 shows to watch this week

1. I Am Paul Walker – Sunday, September 2, 6:20 p.m., TMN1

Fans are still mourning the death of Paul Walker, who passed away in a 2013 car crash. The star of The Fast and the Furious and its myriad sequels is eulogized in this heartfelt documentary that was described in one review as “an incomplete look at an incomplete life.” Walker’s story? is told largely via interviews with the late actor’s family and friends, with interviewees including The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen and Walker’s frequent co-star Tyrese Gibson.

2. The Simpsons – Sunday, September 2, 7:30 p.m. & 8 p.m., Fox

Springfield’s First Family returns with a new season September 30th, but in the meantime, here are a couple reruns to tide you over. In the first, Homer tries to turn Maggie into a star after discovering her gift for whistling. In the second, Grampa gets a hearing aid, but doesn’t particularly like what he’s hearing.

3. AFI Life Achievement Awards: A Tribute to George Clooney – Monday, September 3, 5 p.m. & 8:30 p.m., TCM

The American Film Institute pays tribute to actor, director, philanthropist—and tequila billionaire!—George Clooney in this gala in which the former ER star is honoured by such luminaries as Bill Murray, Miley Cyrus, Jimmy Kimmel, Don Cheadle, Cate Blanchett, director Steven Soderbergh, former U.S. President Barack Obama and Clooney’s wife, Amal.

4. RBG – Monday, September 3, 6 p.m. & 9 p.m., CNN

For 25 years, Ruth Bader Ginsburg has been a progressive voice on America’s Supreme Court. At age 85, the trailblazing Supreme continues to be a beacon ?of hope in an increasingly dark world, and this critically acclaimed documentary shines a well-earned spotlight on her extraordinary life. Featuring comments from Ginsburg herself, other interviewees include Gloria Steinem, NPR’s Nina Totenberg, Senator Orrin Hatch and Lilly Ledbetter, whose groundbreaking lawsuit against tire manufacturer Goodyear led to the Fair Pay Act of 2009. “We knew we wanted to help make this film to explore Ginsburg’s significance to the way women live their lives today—and this exceptional film about her life has only become more relevant with…? the current interest in the court and continued necessary attention to workplace protections for women,” said CNN’s Amy Entelis of the movie, directed by Betsy West and Julie Cohen.

5. The Ellen Degeneres Show – Tuesday, September 4, Noon, CTV2; 3 p.m. CTV & NBC | Season Premiere

We’re on the cusp of a new fall TV season, but amidst the impending avalanche? of dramas, comedies and reality competitions, let’s take a second to acknowledge the illustrious return of the queen of daytime. That’s right, Ellen Degeneres is goofy-dancing her way back onto the scene with a whole new season. While she and her team are keeping most of the details under wraps as per usual (hey, you have to give comedians room to improv’ their material and round up all those delightful YouTube videos she so loves to share with us), we?do know that the superstar likes of Channing Tatum, Britney Spears, Tom Hanks and Eddie Murphy plan on stopping by. Meanwhile, Michelle Obama will seemingly continue her campaign to get out the vote by making an appearance, and LeBron James?—who recently got into quite the tiff with Donald Trump, will also pop by to chat about the state of the world (and probably promote his upcoming, politically charged docuseries Shut Up and Dribble). It’s not all actors, athletes and politics, though. Two other expected guests for the first week back include American gymnasts Aly Raisman and Simone Biles, who will show off their Olympic medal-winning moves. Whether those moves are a match for Ellen’s remains to be seen.

6. Mayans M.C. – Tuesday, September 4, 7 p.m., 8:30 p.m. & 10 p.m., FX Canada | Series Premiere

Where Sons of Anarchy left off, Mayans M.C. pretty much picks up. Almost four years later, executive producer Kurt Sutter’s saga ?of motorcycle gangs on the California-Mexico border resumes, shifting focus from Jax Teller’s SAMCRO to their Latinx rivals, the Mayans. Some familiar names and faces from the earlier drama factor in (including a cameo from Katey Sagal’s Lady Macbeth-like Gemma Teller), but largely, Mayans M.C. weaves its own saga, as J.D. Pardo (Revolution) plays a just-parolled ex-convict returning home—and possibly joining the Mayans as he tries to reconcile with his father (Edward James Olmos) and Mayans-member brother (Clayton Cardenas).

7. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – Wednesday, September 5, 7 p.m., 8 p.m. & 10 p.m., FX Canada | Season Premiere

Since it first premiered back in 2005, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia ?has proven to be one of television’s sharpest, most consistently hilarious comedies. With the show’s 13th season kicking off this week, the skewed sitcom set in an Irish bar continues to push the envelope with edgy storylines and a surprise guest star filling in for a sort-of departed cast member.

With star Glenn Howerton (a.k.a. Dennis Reynolds) currently committed to a second season of NBC sitcom A.P. Bio, his availability was limited this season (he will, however, appear sporadically). To fill the void, Mindy Kaling is being brought in as a pinch-hitter, a new member of the Paddy’s Pub gang whose penchant for vanity, selfishness, and obliviousness to the feelings of others makes her a perfect fit.

8. Cable Girls – Friday, September 7, Netflix | Season Premiere

The switchboards are lighting up again with the third season of this Spanish-language drama. With gorgeous 1920s costumes and fearless female friendships brought to life by stars? Ana Fernandez, Nadia de Santiago, Blanca Suarez and Maggie Civantos, the show ?is a true buried treasure in Netflix’s unwieldy catalogue. So far over the first two seasons, we’ve seen nuanced, compelling feminist storylines that tackle everything from domestic abuse and double lives to pulse-pounding spy games and the forging of unexpected, unbreakable bonds.

Heading into this next batch of episodes, we’re expecting more of the same. While the streaming service has been mum on storylines, a teaser trailer reveals this season takes a leap forward to the 1930s, where it seems as though our leading ladies are ready to tackle a new decade with aplomb.

9. Sierra Burgess is a Loser – Friday, September 7, Netflix

The dearly devoured Barb may not be making her way back to Stranger Things for the acclaimed series’ third season, but actress Shannon Purser certainly isn’t finished with Netflix: she’s the star of this new Original movie.

Calling it “Original” isn’t the most accurate description, however, since it’s an unabashed retelling of the classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac. But at least there’s a little something different to the story this time around: the film’s Cyrano equivalent is—gasp!—female. Purser plays the titular Sierra, who’s been deemed by? her high-school peers as a total loser, but when she accidentally ends up with the cellphone belonging to Veronica (Kristine Froseth), one of the hottest girls in school, Sierra finds herself talking a good enough game to win over Jamey (Noah Centineo), one of the hottest boys in school. But as with all Cyrano retellings, there’s a catch: what happens when Jamey realizes that Sierra is—to put it mildly—no Veronica?

10. Stand Up to Cancer – Friday, September 7, 8 p.m., CBC, CHEK, City, CTV, Global, ABC, CBS, Fox & NBC

A decade ago, Katie Couric first helped inspire many celebrities to “Stand Up to Cancer.”

Since then, the fundraising event that shares its name with the year-round campaign ?has aired every other year across broadcast, cable ?and streaming platforms. ?As the special returns ?this Friday, actor Bradley Cooper is an executive producer again, as ?numerous personalities highlight advances? made in cancer research through donations ?pledged by individuals ?and organizations, ?amounting to more than $480 million in the past 10 years. Among others, this year’s stars include Jennifer Garner, Ed Helms, Jillian Michaels, Kathy Bates, Mahershala Ali, Keith Urban, Matthew McConaughey, Trevor Noah and Reese Witherspoon.
