Our shop locally expert Saul Brown finds us 6 of his best gift ideas in Vancouver.
Let’s face it, we don’t need more stuff, as our editor and chief Hilary Henegar so eloquently wrote in her article ‘Hilary Hates Gifts Gift Guide.’ There are lots of ways to appreciate people through sharing experiences and all things creative. But sending and receiving gifts is part of our culture—and can be meaningful when there’s a good story behind it.
With that in mind, I’ve come up with a list of my favourite holiday gift ideas—all sourced locally to Vancouver, of course—that make it easy to give useful and enjoyable gifts that go beyond just “stuff” this season.
Reusable food wrap made from waxed cotton. I’ve been using it for the last year and it works great. I use the Abeego Wrap for taking sandwiches to work and the Abeego flats for covering up bowls and wrapping half cut vegetables in my kitchen at home. Be sure to only wash with cold soapy water or your Abeego will get messed up! Made in Victoria, BC

This stuff is simply awesome. Made locally in Vancouver using the best quality ingredients, food enthusiast Hilary Haseltine crafts up some top notch caramel sauce. My favorite is the White Lie Whisky Caramel sauce, it’s a real hard one to resist and great on top of vanilla ice cream. I’ve been known to just eat it by the spoonful. This is an easy one for the sweet tooth on your shopping list.

I have a hard time not eating these off our shelf and am tempted everyday. Made with milk chocolate with a peanut crunch and topped with Madagascar vanilla infused sea salt these little bad boys are all that. Wendy Boys is a pro.

If dark chocolate’s your thing then go for Cocolico sponge toffee, it’s also off the hook. Remember those ‘Crunchie’ candy bars growing up? It’s like that but for grown ups that know better.
Cocolico by Wendy Boys products are available locally at Whole Foods and many other locations around BC.
Simply the best. Rich two layer butter cookies layered with jam and topped with chocolate, marzipan, or powdered sugar. Michael Kraus runs One Planet Catering, the premier sustainable catering company in Vancouver. Easy to share around the office, stuff stockings, or leave out for Santa, I guarantee these will be well enjoyed.
