Kicking off this weekend and continuing once a month through the summer (June 11, July 9, August 13 and September 17), Railtown Cafe’s al fresco barbecue sees co-owners Dan Olson and Tyler Day roll out their custom-built 12-foot barbecue barrel to serve up a mouth-watering selection of slow-smoked brisket, pork shoulder, beer-brined chicken and sausages alongside a choice of made-from-scratch sides.

Inspired by owner Lauren Mote’s travels to Iceland last year, Bittered Sling hosts a pop-up brunch, which features cocktails created with the Icelandic liquor Brennivín Aquavit and showcases plates such as spot prawn, albacore tuna and poached mussel salad with fermented red lentils, asparagus and smoked sea urchin dressing.

Take a jaunt to North Vancouver for a self-guided tour of the gardens of the North Shore this weekend. Organized by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council, the two-day open garden festival includes 16 incredible gardens, artwork from 32 local artists and 20 musical performances.

La Pentola’s chef Travis McCord will be preparing cena di mucca (supper of cow) as a family-style feast that respects the animal by using as much of it as possible. Creamy homemade burrata with housemade bresaola, beef tenderloin tartare with pickled rhubarb and tendon crackling, and a hay-aged whole-roasted strip loin will be starring on the menu. Wine pairings by sommelier Christopher McFadden are available.

Granville Island will once again be hosting an interdisciplinary arts festival for little ones to enjoy everything from learning to juggle to exploring a maze, making origami animals and playing human board games. Since 1978, the festival has been a favourite event for kids and this year’s theatre, music, dance, circus, puppetry and storytelling features favourites such as musical duo Splash’N Boots and tricks from Circus Incognitus.

Check out The Cultch’s latest art show, which features work from photographer Silmara Albi, focusing on the changing face of movie theatres in B.C.; cityscapes by Carol McQuaid; and Faber Neifer’s photographic documentation of his hometown of Vancouver. Transportation was the central idea of Expo 86 and as part of the 30-year anniversary celebrations, the Museum of Vancouver is hosting a night of talks focusing on this theme. In addition, the event features a live performance by Gamelan Bike Bike, a group of cycle enthusiasts who collect discarded bicycle parts and recycle them into instruments to explore traditional Indonesian percussive music. Expo 86 hosted the first International Gamelan Festival with performances by visiting musicians from Bali.

Powering into its 27th season, Bard on the Beach opens with the famous tragic love story of star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. The comedy of Merry Wives of Windsor, the tragedy of Othello and the lesser-known exotic Pericles will also be playing as part of the much-anticipated season of Shakespeare by the sea.

A pop-up shop of Lucky’s Doughnuts will appear in Chinatown on Friday in support of Lucky’s founder Colter Jones and his Aprons for Gloves team. Doughnuts, coffee, iced drinks and other treats will be available for purchase. Both 49th Parallel & Lucky’s Doughnuts Cafés at 2198 West 4th Ave in Kits and 2902 Main Street will be running specials, including $5 for a doughnut and any size drip coffee; $5 for any two doughnuts; and $6 for a doughnut and espresso beverage (cappuccino, latte, macchiato).

Beer fans can rejoice as Vancouver Craft Beer Week brings over 100 international breweries and cideries to town from all over the world. The US Brewers’ Association will be showcasing rare beers not found in Canada and the three-day festival will also feature 12 bands on The CFOX Mainstage, Mark Woodyard & Friends on the Bullfrog Power Stage in the Not So Secret Garden, and DJs from Donnelly Taverns on the Lamplighter Stage.
