Movies in the Morgue: The Shining – Oct 10

The Vancouver Police Museum is inviting brave movie buffs to the morgue, where they screen scary movies the second Tuesday of every month. This week’s feature flick, The Shining, is a quintessential horror story that will surely kick your Halloween adrenaline into high gear. Pack your pillows and blankets to feel right at home among the ghosts of the city.

Turkey Trot – Oct 11 to 12

If you’re craving some exercise to compensate for all the eating you’ll be doing this weekend, sign up for Granville Island’s popular Turkey Trot. This year the race, which supports the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and Granville Island’s Arts Umbrella, will also include a Kids Fun Run and Preschoolers Dash on Sunday. On Monday the field opens up to adults for the main event: a 10k run/walk/stroll. If you’re still lacking motivation then maybe the free food, drinks, yoga, music, awards and more will encourage you to cross the finish line.

Free Hot Drinks at Faubourg – Oct 12 to 18

Faubourg Paris is celebratingits 5th anniversary, and to show its appreciation, they’re inviting loyalty cardholders for un café. All three Vancouver locations (Kerrisdale, Downtown and West Vancouver) will be serving up free hot drinks during the first two hours of operation from the 12th through to the 18th, and all day long on the 16th.

Madonna’s Rebel Heart Tour – Oct 14

Her Madgesty, the Queen of Pop, is coming to Vancouver and it’s bound to start “Causing a Commotion”. Madonna, who has been called the most successful live performer of all time, is touring her “Rebel Heart” album, which features three iTunes chart toppers including hit single “Living for Love”. It marks the very first time the record-shattering solo artist will perform in Vancouver making this an opportunity you really don’t want to miss.

Playland Fright Nights – Oct 9 to Nov 1

Fright Nights at Playland is back in full swing — quite literally. This year’s spooky Halloween theme park features The Beast, a brand-new ride that swings guests 120 degrees while they are spun in their seats. Western Canada’s largest grown-up Halloween event also includes seven haunted houses, 15 rides, an old-fashioned monster “freak show” and a brand-new fire show by the Radiant Heat Fire Troupe. Ticket prices vary by date but are $3 cheaper if purchased online or at a 7-Eleven location.

Reel Rock 10 – Oct 14 & 16

The Vancouver International Mountain Film Festival Fall Series doesn’t start until November, but you can get your first taste of mountain adventure this weekend with two screenings of Reel Rock 10. The compilation of five outdoor films features such notable world-class climbers as Tommy Caldwell, Kevin Jorgeson, Alex Honnold, Jimmy Webb, and Daniel Woods — with a special tribute to the late Dean Potter — and promises to get you amped for the upcoming festival.

Taste of Yaletown – Oct 15 to 29

Science World After Dark – Oct 16

If Ben Stiller’s Night at the Museum awakened your inner child, now is your chance to live out the dream firsthand. This Friday, Science World will open its doors (and its beer taps) to a 19+ crowd for three and a half hours of adult-only fun. Do the statues and skeletons really come alive at night? Vancouver Giants vs. Tri-City Americans – Oct 16

The Canucks are playing at home this weekend, but that’s no reason to forget about our WHL team. The Vancouver Giants are hosting the Tri-City Americans this Friday night at the Pacific Coliseum. The Giants are back home after a road trip through the prairies, and with tickets starting at just $5 this is hockey entertainment everyone can afford.
